Russell Kane reveals he was booted out of school after failing exams in GMB debate

Good Morning Britain welcomed an education debate this morning as A Level students will be picking up their results today and finding out if they can get into university.

Hosts Kate Garraway and Ben Shephard have been discussing results on the show and whether in-person university lectures need to return or if fees need to be dropped.

As the pair welcomed comedian Russell Kane onto their show to discuss staycations, the conversation soon turned to education as Kate asked him how he did at school, mentioning she believed he did “quite well”.

Russell quickly corrected her, admitting that the first time he was in school, his exams didn’t go nearly as well as he had hoped.

Russell revealed that he didn’t do well in his A Levels, but managed to get to university afterwards

Russell responded: “I’m going to disagree with you there, I initially failed all my exams and I was belched out of my comprehensive because ‘the same education works for all’ remember.

“There I was, I had nothing. I was at a cross roads. I was one of the council house kids and there was that way, and that way, and I had to decide. I could have easily slipped into things I shouldn’t have been doing.”

Russell said it wasn’t until he was 21 that he went to university to ask which A Level he would need to get onto their English Literature course and he needed an A, so he chose sociology for his subject.

When he was informed that he needed to get an A-grade A Level in to do his English Literature degree at university, he went back to college and achieved it.

In his debate, he said: “What annoys me about this debate is there is this massive debt, and the first thing someone says is, ‘Yes but it’s a loan, you don’t pay it back until you’re earning a certain amount,’ you have to put yourself in the position of growing up as someone like me who is terrified of any debt regardless of how it’s repaid.

“You can tell us all day long ‘It’s only £60,000 worth of debt you can pay it back once you’re working’, it’s an in-built cultural fear. A lot of people are brought up to be scared of debt. That’s the other issue you’ve got.”

As Russell shared his thoughts on university and the education system as a whole, he was immediately praised by viewers, with one user writing: “Listening to Russell Kane on GMB, bloody fantastic. Well said, totally my thoughts on schools.”

Meanwhile, another person said: “Russell Kane speaks more sense than anybody in government, I could listen to him every day.”

A third person wrote: “Russell Kane just smashed the education debate. Well done.”

GMB continues tomorrow at 6am on ITV.
