Sarah Harding almost died from sepsis and was in coma after cancer diagnosis

Sarah Harding almost died from sepsis shortly after her cancer diagnosis.

The Girls Aloud star has revealed how she was placed into a two week coma where her life was in the hands of medics.

Writing in her upcoming book Hear Me Out, extracts of which have been shared in The Times, Sarah said: “At first I thought it was just a cyst.

“The trouble was the pain was getting worse. It got so bad that I couldn’t sleep in a bed. Eventually my skin started to bruise. By now I was terrified.”

She added: “One day I woke up realising I’d been in denial. Yes there was a pandemic but it was almost as if I’d been using that as an excuse not to face up to the fact that something was very wrong.”

Sarah is understood to go on to explain how she was rushed to hospital where she was placed into intensive care.

She had to have a port fitted into her chest which led to sepsis.

It was at this point that she was placed into a medically induced coma by doctors to give her the best chance to make a recovery.

It’s understood that both Sarah’s lungs and kidney’s were failing at the time.

Sarah writes: “Even once I was off the ventilator I couldn’t speak properly.

“All I could do was make noises like a chimpanzee trying to communicate.”

Sarah tragically told fans in August last year how she had been diagnosed with cancer.

Trying to keep upbeat, she posted on Instagram: “I am fighting as hard as I can.”

The chart-topper candidly said: “”Earlier this year I was diagnosed with breast cancer and a couple of weeks ago I received the devastating news that the cancer has advanced to other parts of my body.

“I’m currently undergoing weekly chemotherapy sessions and I am fighting as hard as I possibly can.

“I understand this might be shocking to read on social media and that really isn’t my intention.

“My amazing mum, family and close friends are helping me through this, and I want to say a thank you to the wonderful NHS doctors and nurses who have been and continue to be heroes.”

Speaking on Instagram live earlier this week, Sarah’s former bandmate and close friend Nadine Coyle explained how any potential plans to celebrate Girls Aloud’s 20th anniversary are on hold until she makes a full recovery.

Nadine said: “I would love to be like ‘yes, this is what we are doing’ – at the minute it is very much thinking about Sarah, very much being there for Sarah.

“It is a really unfortunate time for her and the whole thing is like ‘come on, come on’ because that could be the priory talking about ‘shall we go do a tour’ or ‘should we do something’?”

She added on Sink The Pink’s Instagram live session: “Instead we are worried about Sarah, so we are focusing everything. That is the main priority.”
