Simon Thomas marries Derrina Jebb four years after late wife's tragic death

Simon Thomas has revealed he has married his partner Derrina Jebb, almost four years after the tragic death of his late wife Gemma.

The former Blue Peter presenter shared a photo of himself and his new wife walking down the aisle in Norwich Cathedral after saying their vows.

The 48-year-old could be seen wearing a navy blue suit with a white shirt and white tie, as well as a matching flower on his lapel.

Derrina – the daughter of a church minister – wore a classic white gown with a V-line neck, and a subtle veil which was draped over her rich, brunette hair, styled in loose waves.

He wrote in the caption: “Love. Wins,” and added a white heart emoji.

The dad-of-one was showered with love from his friends and Instagram followers, with some of them clearly having been at the ceremony.

Fellow former Blue Peter star Angelica Bell wrote: “Thank you for letting us share your special day.”

A follower commented: “Oh wow congratulations! Derrina looks stunning!”

A second said: “Aw this warms my heart! So lovely to see you so happy! Congratulations!”

And a third wrote: “Aw many happy congratulations! I’m so happy for you all!”

Simon’s happy news comes almost four years after his wife Gemma died, in November 2017.

Gemma lost her life due to an aggressive form of blood cancer, and Simon went on to raise money and awareness for charities which help with the disease.

Simon married Gemma in 2005 and they were married for 12 years before her tragic death.

They had one son together – Ethan – who was sadly just nine when his mother died.

Gemma was 40 years old when she died, just three days after she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia – an aggressive form of cancer which is usually found in people over 80.

In his book written after his loss, Simon wrote: “In her final week, she went to the GP twice, but each time she was sent home without even a blood test. Whenever I relive that time in my mind, the guilt is always there, nagging away at me.

“I’m still asking myself those same questions: ‘Why the hell didn’t you do something? Why didn’t you pick her up, carry her to the car and take her straight to hospital before it got so bad?'”

A year after Gemma’s death, Simon went public with Derrina, who was 27 at the time, describing her as an “amazing woman who has stood shoulder to shoulder with me in some of my darkest hours”.

He told Anna Foster on BBC Radio 5 Live that his new partner had “become not just a rock for me, but for my boy too”.

Simon, who went public with Derrina at the Cheltenham Festival in 2019, has previously spoken out about struggling with the phrase “moving on”.

“I don’t think you ever really do move on from what’s happened,” he said. “That hole that a loved one leaves doesn’t shrunk over time.

“Life begins to grow around it. You begin to deal with some of the challenges grief throws up, being a single parent throws up.”

He went on: “I’ve got two choices. Give up – I can’t do that, I don’t want to do that, I’ve got a boy to bring up, I promised Gemma. The only other choice then is you walk.

“Right from the start I felt, I’ve got to find life again.”
