Andy Gray, the popular BBC Scotland star from River City has died from cancer at the age of 61.
The actor was based in Perth and played the very popular character Pete on the soap.
Unfortunately Andy left River City in 2018 after he was diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer called Myelodysplastic syndromes, shortened to MDS.
Tributes have poured in for the TV and theatre star, who was hailed a “national treasure” in Scotland.
A previous colleague also called him a “much-loved” comedy star, and he will be greatly missed.
“We are deeply saddened by the news that one of Scotland’s much loved comedy actors and close friend to many at BBC Scotland has passed away,” BBC Scotland director Steve Carson said.
“Among many roles for the BBC he will always be lovingly remembered as audience favourites, the iconic ‘Chancer’ in City Lights and the silver tongued entertainer Pete Galloway in River City,” he went on to say.
“On screen and in person he could always make you laugh and was one of the kindest people to have around on any production.
“Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.”
Trainspotting star Robert Carlyle shared: “RIP Andy Gray… One of the loveliest, sweetest, funniest actors i ever had the pleasure to work with.
“So sad and such huge loss to his loving family and friends.”
“Andy Gray was a huge presence. Huge heart, huge brain, huge spirit, huge passion. And he will be hugely missed,” Sanjeev Kohli said.
Liam Rudden added: “Devastated to hear that the supremely talented. Edinburgh panto legend and star of TV and stage Andy Gray has left us at 60. Too, too soon. My thoughts with Tamara, Claire, his family and friends.”
Andy’s River City wife Caitlin McLean, played by Gayle Teller Stevens, was heartbroken by the news.
Reflecting on her time working with Andy on-set, she said: “When you were in his presence you could feel it was of greatness. The most kind, clever, funny beyond measure, beautiful man.
“One of the finest our country has ever had the pleasure to experience and we were so lucky to have had the time we did with you,” Gayle told The Scottish Sun. “Andy – you will be achingly missed. Your laugh will echo in Scotland’s heart and you will never be forgotten. Love you forever.”
The star has also appeared in a variety of other TV shows, including Naked Video.
Andy also had a role in City Lights in the 80s, a sitcom about a bank teller who dreams of being a writer.
