Martin Compston is known to many as DI Steve Arnott in BBC’s Line of Duty, known for having an English accent.
However, Soccer Aid viewers were speechless after hearing his real accent, with Martin, 37, actually having a Scottish accent.
The fan favourite, originally from Greenock, Scotland, often takes on the role of English characters in programmes, with his authentic accent rarely making an appearance.
Martin is playing on the World XI FC squad due to his Scottish heritage.
The actor delivered a charity broadcast, urging viewers at home to part with their money in hopes of raising millions for UNICEF.
Martin was sharing the story about brother and sister, Justin and Justine who found themselves in a “terrifying situation” just several months ago.
The siblings found themselves in a state of despair after Mount Nyiragongo in Congo erupted for the first time in almost two decades, leaving the pair “seeing red fire” as they fled for their lives.
However, seconds after Martin’s appearance, many took to Twitter to share their shock over his accent.
“Mad hearing Steve Arnots natural voice #socceraid,” said one.
Before a second added: “DCI Steve Arnott is actually Scottish?!”
“Steve Arnott is Scottish, mind blown,” exclaimed a third.
While a fourth penned: “I still cannot get my head around Martin Compston being Scottish.”
Ahead of tonight’s match, Martin revealed he was over the moon that the match would be going ahead, amidst fears that it would be cancelled.
Taking to Twitter, he penned: “Game day. Sell out, England team looking tasty, this could be some game! Please tune in @itv tonight 6.30pm and donate if you can @socceraid@UNICEF_ukhttp://socceraid.org.uk/donate.”
Martin was set to be playing alongside Roman Kemp and Chelcee Grimes during tonight’s match as part of the World XI FC squad.
However, Roman announced on Friday that he was withdrawing with immediate effect after testing positive for coronavirus.
The squad, alongside the England team, had been training at Mottram Hall, Cheshire, at the time of Roman’s positive result, leaving the match in jeopardy.
Paddy McGuinness was also forced to withdraw from the match just hours before after sustaining a mystery injury.
It was later announced that comedian Joel Dommett would be taking Paddy’s place as goalkeeper for the England team, hoping to defend goals from the likes of Dermott Kennedy, Chelcee Grimes and Yungblud.
