Steph's Packed Lunch viewers annoyed saying you shouldn't take pics of food

Many of us are counting down the days until we can eat inside a restaurant again, after weeks of braving the beer gardens.

Steph’s Packed Lunch on Channel 4 discussed how addicted we all are to mobile phones, and they got onto the subject of using phones during mealtimes.

Show chef Freddy Forster got viewers talking after he said you shouldn’t take pictures of your food, and host Steph called him a “fun sponge.”

“That’s a compliment to the chef taking a photo!” she insisted.

Freddy said: “Well, I’m very passionate about this particular subject here, especially in the restaurant industry.”

“When we open up next week, I think we should ban telephones. I see a lot of customers who are dining, and when the food comes out hot, they should be eating it but they take photographs.”

“It takes five or six minutes before they actually even think about eating the food, and I’ve heard many people complain saying their food is cold! I’m not surprised.”

He continued: “There’s a time and a place to do everything. When you’ve got quality food in front of you, you’re there to enjoy it.”

Viewers tweeted in with their opinions.

One said: “Who does Freddy think he is telling people they shouldn’t take photos of their food because he has cooked it and they should eat it immediately? They paid for the food, he has not done them a favour. They can pour ketchup over it if they wish. He is clearly up his own arse!”

Another added that they too think it’s rude: “My first experience of a mobile phone user in a restaurant was in 1995, in Roscoff in Belfast, the man at the next table was talking loudly and I was appalled. It’s just rude to have mobile phones at a restaurant table, put them away for the duration of the visit.”

Someone else disagreed with Freddy: “If I’ve paid for the food and I want to take a photo of it, I will. No one else’s business. Different if someone is having a loud conversation and disrupting everyone else.”

However a few people supported the chef: “Freddy wants people to show him respect as they should. Unless you are dining alone or need your phone for the babysitter there is no excuse. It’s just damn rude.”

“Completely agree with Freddy, if you’re at home, take all the photos of your meals as you like. In a restaurant, absolutely not. Also agree that all phones should be switched off during the meal” said another viewer.

Guests Anton Du Beke, Kate Robbins and Baroness Warsi also shared their thoughts.

Anton said: “It’s not free is it, the food, I’m paying for it! So if I don’t want to eat it, I want to admire it for 25 minutes first, I can.”

Freddy lashed back: “We have to agree to disagree here. If that’s your take on it, maybe you should go to Tesco and buy a takeaway meal and do that.”

Anton said Freddy was getting grumpy.

Meanwhile, Baroness Warsi agreed with Freddy: “I hate going to restaurants where all the food is out, and you just want to say let’s dive in, let’s share it and people won’t even let me eat my food because my friends need to photograph my meal! If you start eating it, you’re rude.”
