Strictly fans defend John Whaite as Craig Revel Horwood brands dance 'odd'

Strictly Come Dancing fans have leapt to the defence of John Whaite and Johannes Radebe after Craig Revel Horwood savaged their dance.

On Saturday night’s episode of the BBC’s hit ballroom contest, the pair failed to win over the outspoken judge with their routine, and he wasn’t shy about letting them know.

Last week, the fan-favourites made a well-earned climb to the top of the leaderboard with a jaw-dropping Movie Week performance inspired by Pirates of the Caribbean, and a hard-to-impress Craig loved it.

But this week, the Aussie choreographer couldn’t get his head around their American Smooth along to Aretha Franklin and George Michael’s 1987 hit I Knew You Were Waiting.

Once the duo had finished strutting their stuff, the 56-year-old tore their routine to shreds, saying it was like something from a night in London club Heaven.

“It was very, very odd,” he said, before slamming 2012 Great British Bake Off winner John for his “bottom sticking out”.

Craig went on to blast the routine as fragmented, arguing: “For me, the whole thing didn’t come together.”

But fans of the dancing partners – who are making history as the first all-male couple to grace the ballroom – thought the judge got it wrong.

Taking to Twitter, one wrote: “Oh my, Jojo and John give me goosebumps every time they dance. Craig needs chocolate tonight. I don’t know what he is watching. I loved it.”

A second added: “Absolutely loving the fire, energy and talent of John and Johannes every week. They make me smile, they make me emotional, and watching two men dancing together is the most natural thing in the world.”

But other Strictly fans took Craig’s side, with one arguing: “I think I’m in disagreement with most but I didn’t like the suits, especially the brown one, and the song was very American 80s, so I kind of agree with Craig. I wasn’t sure what it was trying to be.”

Another said: “I agree with Craig yet again. He’s the only one who speaks the truth. Even though he did it well, the dance itself was a bit all over the place. For an American Smooth it didn’t work.”

Strictly continues Sunday night at 7.10pm on BBC One
