Strictly favourite Rose Ayling-Ellis has revealed the secret to how she dances without hearing – counting.
The EastEnders actress has been dazzling viewers with her performances on the BBC ballroom show and a lot of people see her and her pro partner Giovanni Pernice as frontrunners.
Many viewers have been left in awe by the way Rose masters the moves despite being unable to hear music, and she has now shared that she counts in her head.
Speaking to The Times, she said: “Because I am not a hearing person, I don’t really know what I am comparing it to. What I do know is that you can hear where noise comes from. I don’t have that. Also you can filter out background noise, which I can’t. The noise is all in one and is indistinct.”
Rose – who stars as Frankie Lewis in the BBC soap – said things can get tricky because the count in her head sometimes goes faster than the one in her body.
She then has to try to “bring it together”.
Giovanni said he gives Rose the count and that she then has to memorise it.
During some segments of their routines, Giovanni conveys the timing to the 27-year-old actress.
It is, he says, like “conducting an orchestra”.
“If you go out just a little bit, then you are out of the music,” he said.
Rose, who is the first deaf contestant on Strictly, has been a big hit with viewers and many are pulling for her to win the coveted Glitterball trophy.
Twitter has been flooded with posts supporting the star every week.
“I need Rose to win Strictly, it’s a need not a want,” one said, while others said the star “deserves to win”.
“Rose moves as if she could dance right up off the floor, like a little woodland fairy in flight,” said another. “Her partnership with Giovanni works so well. Technically superb.”
