Sunday Brunch erupts into chaos as chef Simon Rimmer’s frying pan sets on fire

Popular morning show Sunday Brunch erupted into chaos as Simon Rimmer’s frying pan caught fire.

The chef was partway through demonstrating how to prepare a Gnocchi dish alongside fellow foodie Tim Lovejoy on the Channel 4 programme when disaster struck.

Joined by guests including Miranda actress Sarah Hadland, Ghosts star Kiell Smith-Bynoe, singer Imelda May and actress Susanna Fielding, the show was moving along nicely.

But as Simon fried the Gnocchi in a pan of oil, things soon went south.

“Gnocchi, when it comes to the surface, you pop it straight in your frying pan. I mean, you don’t have to, but there’s something nice about fried potato,” the chef explained.

Guests were left shocked as the pan erupted into flames

“What you get is this nice colour on them and again, when they go into the pan don’t shake them around, be brave, let them kind of sit there.

“You want to get them coloured on all of the surfaces.

“Obviously, we are running out of time, so we haven’t got time to do that.”

But as Simon added a tomato-based sauce to the pan, flames from the hob began to rise.

His guests’ jaws dropped in shock, as Susanna put both hands over her mouth.

“Fire!” Tim warned – but an unaffected Simon merely continued to stir the mixture as though nothing was amiss.

“That’s nice, that’s lovely,” he said.

Fans on social media were left similarly speechless, with one simply posting a GIF of a man gesturing at a fire alongside the caption: “Simon is like…”

He continued on with the dish as though there had never been a fire threatening the kitchen at all, and said: “What we do is serve. You don’t need loads of this, it’s pretty rich stuff.”

Fans were later left confused by Simon’s latest recipe

Adding a sprinkling of homemade pesto to the top of the dish, Simon grated Italian cheese over the Gnocchi as a finishing touch.

Later in the programme, Simon left fans slightly baffled by a dish he dubbed ‘Sweetcorn Wings’.

“I’m calling it sweetcorn wings but they’re also called sweetcorn ribs,” he explained. “As we know, sweetcorn doesn’t have wings and they don’t have ribs.”

The dish was comprised of deep-fried sweetcorn with ranch dressing.

Simon added: “The flavour is delicious and as I say, just be careful if you’re going to buy the raw sweetcorn…”

But fans flocked to Twitter in droves to share their bafflement, with one writing: “Can I substitute the [vegetables] for deep fried Mars Bars? Please?”

Another quipped: “Simon is really running out of recipes, isn’t he?”
