Super Bowl viewers witnessed The Weeknd become the latest superstar to headline the prestigious Pepsi halftime show slot on Sunday.
The 30-year-old singer-songwriter took to the stage at the Raymond Jame Stadium as Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers had a break from playing the big NFL match.
He kicked off his set with his hit single Star Boy before going into a rendition of fan favourites The Hills and I Can’t Feel My Face.
The musician then left the stage and entered a bizarre mirror room where he was joined by a troupe of dancers wearing face coverings.
Fans were distracted from the performance as the camera work made it look as if the room was spinning.
Viewers rushed to their keyboards to given their verdict as The Weeknd entertained millions across the world.
Taking to Twitter, one fan penned: “@theweeknd I almost got sick in the mirror room.”
A second person posted: “Why am I motion sick from watching @theweeknd perform?”
While a third viewer said: “Is The Weeknd trying to get people motion sick? He has a secret deal with tide to get hot wing vomit out of jerseys?”
A fourth social media user wrote: “Dude the beginning of @theweeknd halftime show literally made me feel motion sick wtf lol”
The Weeknd ended his energetic performance with his 20120 smash hit Blinding Light.
He was joined on the pitch by more dancers all wearing matching red blazers, black jeans and face bandages as fireworks lit up the sky.
The singer’s Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack number Earned It also appeared in the packed set list.
The Weeknd, real name Abel Tesfaye, was the first Canadian to headline solo at the event.
Speaking on Sky News last week about whether or not any special guests will join him on stage, the singer said: “I’ve been reading a lot of rumours. I wouldn’t bet on it.
“There wasn’t any room to fit it in the narrative, in the story I was telling in the performance. So yeah. There’s no special guests.”
Viewers were blown away by Jazmine Sullivan and Eric Church’s rendition of the US national anthem ahead of the big game.
The R&B singer and country music star belted out the Star-Spangled Banner anthem as viewers prepared to watch the match.
H.E.R. also performed a rendition of America the Beautiful ahead of the game.
Warren “Wawa” Snipe, a deaf rapper and recording artist, performed the national anthem in American Sign Language on behalf of the National Association of the Deaf.
