Susanna Reid was left far from impressed during Friday’s edition of Good Morning Britain after growing agitated during a segment about marriage.
ITV guests Jeni Barnett and Debbie McGee were discussing if the institution of marriage is fundamentally sexist in its beliefs.
While Debbie instead she didn’t think it was, Jeni wasn’t as convinced.
Explaining her point, Jeni said: “What all us old feminists are saying is, it’s OK to be married, it’s OK to have a wonderful romantic gesture but you have to be who you are!
“And you have to remain who you are. You’re not a chattel! And when I got married, I asked the old man…”
Confused, Susanna interrupted: “Hang on.
“You are married? So it’s a 100% sexist institution but you’ve happily got involved?”
Smiling, Jeni continued: “Well, only after 11 years.
“I did it because we had a kid and I was worried because he’s an actor and a musician [that] if he died I would have to do paperwork and he wouldn’t have done it.
“So we got married so that the child became legitimate and that’s why we did it.”
She added: “He left the marriage lunch and went swimming with the best man!”
Visibly recoiling at the comment, Susanna interrupted again, taking offence at the claim any child is illegitimate at all – regardless of if they were born in wedlock.
She hit out: “It’s a bit of an old fashioned idea that children are ‘illegitimate’ if you’re not married? Children are legitimate, whether you’re married or not!”
Immediately lightning the mood, Jeni teased: “Well you haven’t met mine, my darling, that’s true.”
Luckily, Susanna saw the funny side and started laughing.
The debate was sparked after the government decided to change the Marriage Act so the both parents will be included on a marriage certificate.
