The Chase's Darragh Ennis apologises as fans call him out for incorrect fact

He may be one of the masterminds on hit ITV show The Chase, but it seems even Darragh Ennis gets things wrong from time to time.

The 40 year old is better known as The Menace on the popular game show and joined the roster of Chasers in 2020.

Darragh regularly informs and fascinates his 12.6k followers on Twitter by sharing fun facts and pieces of trivia.

However, on Wednesday morning he was left feeling a little red-faced after being called out by some for sharing a “fake fact”.

Darragh’s original tweet read: “Fun fact: DH Lawrence was the brother in law of Manfred Von Richthoffen, aka The Red Baron.”

However, one Twitter user quickly replied: “I always love your fun facts Darragh! But it looks like Freida was actually a distant relative of Manfred Von Richthofen.

“It appears the authorities in World War 1 thought she might be a spy because of that connection.”

Darragh then replied: “Cheers. It seems you’re right and the ‘facts’ book I read that in needed you as a researcher”.

A different user replied: “Fake fact Darragh. Manfred von Richthofen was born in Wroclaw, now Poland. His father was Major Albrecht Philipp Karl Julius Freiherr von Richthofen.

“Frieda was born in Metz, now France. Her dad was Baron Friedrich Ernst Emil Ludwig von Richthofen, an engineer in the German army.”

Darragh then responded to this user too, noting that the book he took the fact from was to blame – not him.

He tweeted: “Yeah it seems the book I was reading had that one wrong. Whoops.”

But he didn’t stop there, Darragh then replied to his original tweet to recognise his error once again.

“This one isn’t true it seems. That’s what I get for late night fact tweeting and not checking my sources. Thanks for setting me straight guys,” he wrote.

Darragh joined The Chase team in 2020 after appearing on the show as a contestant back in 2017.

He is a postdoctoral researcher at Oxford University where he studies the brains of insects.

Darragh was born in Ireland and has worked at Concordia University and Maynooth University.
