The Chase's Mark Labbett 'penalised' after breaking show rules while filming

The Chase’s Mark Labbett got a telling off on Wednesday’s show, when he was playfully “penalised” for pressing his button too quickly during a tense play-off.

The champion quizzer isn’t allowed to press his buzzer until the players have chosen their answers in round two, but seemingly forgot the rules were in place during the repeat episode.

Irish player Sarah was the first contestant in the hot seat, impressing both Mark and host Bradley Walsh in the cash builder when she earned an impressive £7,000.

She selected the middle offer when facing Mark, but tensions were high as a question about a hit 80s soap opera appeared on the screen.

After Brad read out the question, Mark slammed his buzzer, only to realise his mistake and hold up his hand.

“Sorry,” Mark apologised, realising Sarah was supposed to have the first guess.

“You are penalised for that I’m sorry,” Bradley said, a solemn look on his face, adding: “No lunch.”

Mark, who often makes jokes about his appetite on the show, quipped back: “Oh you know where to hit. Can’t I have a fine?”

The question read: “Jonathan and Jennifer were the chief characters in which 1980s US TV series?”

Hart to Hart, Cover Up, and Scarecrow and Mrs King were the three options listed below, with Sarah correctly plumping for option A.

Mark was impressed by Sarah’s performance, as Brad insisted she ought to have plumped for the high offer of £27,000.

When Mark claimed Sarah was “one of the best” he’d seen on the show, Bradley exclaimed: “Praise indeed from The Beast.

“He never normally says stuff like that – he got out of the right side of bed today.”

Sarah was followed by another strong player – singing barrister Ewan, who racked up £8,000 in the cash builder and made it home and dry with the middle offer.

Bradley was affronted when Mark informed him Ewan had previously been a finalist on another popular quiz show – Mastermind.

“You didn’t tell me!” Brad said, mocking outrage, only for Ewan to hit back: “You didn’t ask me.”

The Chase airs on weekdays at 5pm on ITV.
