The Masked Singer's Justin Hawkins says ITV show was 'lonely' experience

The Darkness’ Justin Hawkins has opened up on his time on The Masked Singer back on series one – saying it was a ‘lonely’ experience.

The hit TV show, which began in South Korea, sees celebrities hide behind masks and battle against each other until only one singing champ remains.

Viewers love trying to guess who the star is behind the glamorous and over-the-top costumes are, convinced hidden clues and giveaway signs are included through their music or characters.

However, The Darkness frontman Justin Hawkins, who appeared as Chameleon in season one has told a different side to the ITV programme.

“The normal rules don’t apply to The Darkness when it comes to stuff that’s a little bit humiliating,” Hawkins tells Classic Rock.

“Anything that gets us out there is going to be considered. But doing The Masked Singer was lonely. You’re not allowed an entourage backstage, cos other people’s entourages might recognise yours, and it would spoil the whole thing.”

“So you go on your own, you put a mask on, you sing some songs, and that’s it.”

He insists he didn’t take it “too seriously” and wanted to be voted out in the first or second week.

He added that his daughter’s birthday was coming up and he would have missed it otherwise.

But his unmasking had another effect, as on week three he was voted out and it led to a surge in people searching him.

He said: “My name was the most searched term on Google. It hadn’t been like that for a long time, let me tell you.”

Hawkins also revealed that he vows to continue to wear his trademark catsuits, even until he’s 50.

The singer doesn’t mind if the tight-fitting clothes cause him problems later on down the line.

The star joked: “I might balloon, I might lose a leg, but I’m still going to f***ing wear that catsuit.”

The costumes for Masked Singer season 3 were released a few days ago – and some are just as strange as the show itself.
