Matthew Wright left This Morning viewers outraged on Friday morning, after a vicious insult aimed at the new Princess Diana statue unveiled on Thursday.
Prince William and Prince Harry came together at Kensington Palace to reveal the statue of their late mother – the first time they had been together since Prince Philip’s funeral in April.
The event commemorated what would have been Diana’s 60th birthday.
But Matthew Wright admitted he “hated” the statue of Diana surrounded by children.
“It’s frumpy,” he said on the programme. “It’s too wide at the waist and it just makes her look…”
Though he trailed off, as journalist Camilla Tominey chipped in: “Critics say she looks like David Bowie, or a young Theresa May.”
She also added that some people have suggested Diana’s top is “too low cut”.
But viewers on social media were left outraged by the bold comments, with one posting: “Matthew Wright sexualising a statue saying the hips are too wide… okay then x #ThisMorning.”
“I wish they wouldn’t have Matthew Wright on the show slating Diana’s statue, his opinions aren’t needed,” someone else penned.
A third viewer posted: “Imagine building a memorial for your much loved parent to then have someone deride it on national TV.”
Others came out in full support of the statue, with one commenter penning: “#ThisMorning love the Diana statue! What’s everyone criticising? I saw it and it feels so touching and reminiscent of Diana.”
The statue was originally commissioned in 2017, and created by sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley, aiming to capture the “warmth, elegancy and energy of Diana”.
Harry flew out to the UK from California for the unveiling, and looked at ease as he chatted to his brother William.
It came four months after his explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey alongside wife Meghan Markle, in which he said of his brother: “As I’ve said before, I love William to bits.
“He’s my brother. We’ve been through hell together. We have a shared experience, but we were on different paths.”

The brothers released a joint statement for the statue’s unveiling, which read: “Today, on what would have been our Mother’s 60th birthday, we remember her love, strength and character – qualities that made her a force for good around the world, changing countless lives for the better.
“Every day, we wish she were still with us, and our hope is that this statue will be seen forever as a symbol of her life and her legacy.”
