Tipping Point fans slam 'disrespectful' Elliot Page question after transition

Tipping Point viewers branded one question on Wednesday’s show as “disrespectful,” as it “deadnamed” Hollywood star Elliot Page.

Elliot, 34, came out as transgender on his social media accounts last year, revealing his new name, Elliot, and changing his pronouns to he/him and they/them.

However, one question on Tipping Point made reference to Elliot’s old name – an act which is known as “deadnaming”.

Deadnaming is when a transgender person is called by their birth name when they have changed their name as part of their gender transition.

Watching from home, certain viewers were hopeful the episode had been recorded before December 1 of last year, when Elliot made the announcement.

The question made reference to Elliot’s birth name, which is also known as “deadnaming”

However, others pointed out the question ought to have been removed from the episode regardless, branding it as “disrespectful” to the Juno star.

Over on Twitter, viewers were dismayed over the question, as they took to their keyboards to flag the issue with ITV.

One wrote: “Having dinner with my gran to see that @TippingPointITV used Elliot Page’s dead name in a question. Incredibly disrespectful no matter if it was intentional or not. Sort it out. #tippingpoint.”

“I hope this episode was made before Elliot came out as transgender. Otherwise that would be a s****y move from itv yet again,” added a second.

A third remarked: “Not #tippingpoint deadnaming Elliot Page like that.”

And a fourth chimed: “Think you need to redo this question since it’s Elliot Page. #tippingpoint.”

“It’s elliot page mate #tippingpoint,” finished a fifth.

In the statement, shared via Twitter, Elliot informed fans of his new name and preferred pronouns, describing the trans community as a source of inspiration.

He wrote: “Hi friends, I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronouns are he/they and my name is Elliot. I feel lucky to be writing this. To be here. To have arrived at this place in my life. I feel overwhelming gratitude for the incredible people who have supported me along this journey.

“I can’t begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self. I’ve been endlessly inspired by so many in the trans community. Thank you for your courage, your generosity and ceaselessly working to make this world a more inclusive and compassionate place.

“I will offer whatever support I can and continue to strive for a more loving and equal society.”

Tipping Point airs on weekdays at 4pm on ITV.
