TV daredevil Bear Grylls admits he could have died on screen and killed celebs with him

TV daredevil Bear Grylls has said he could have died on screen – and killed the celebrity stars with him after adventuring in what he calls an “unpredictable environment”.

The adventurer was stunned to learn that two of the danger hotspots he took celebrities to film at were death traps.

The 47-year-old star revealed: “I have just heard that the cave we filmed in with the comedian Rob Brydon and the cliff face I rappelled with the actor Warwick Davis have both since collapsed.

“Both incidents would have killed us and the crew,” the star said of the shocking revelations.

“But how do you plan against forces of nature like that, apart from minimise your exposure to the danger, move fast, listen to the local experts, and say your prayers”

“There are no guarantees in the wild. It’s an unpredictable environment. Wild by name and nature. That’s just the game we work in.”

Bear has lifted the lid on some of his near-misses in his new book Never Give Up and admitted he is lucky to survive earlier risky missions.

He said: “Nowadays, I am so cautious about how we operate. I should have died many times in those early adventures, and when you get low on ‘lives’, you have to get smarter, wiser and more risk-averse… or one day you simply won’t come home.

“This is why, having made it out alive from so many close scrapes (often small, unseen, forgettable moments, but ones that could so easily have gone the wrong way), I finally consider myself a bit smarter.

“I like to say that my knowledge now is the sum of all my near-misses. And on that basis, I can call myself ‘experienced’.

“Although, having said that, we never as a team get complacent.”

Bear also recently confessed he regrets killing “way too many animals” in the early seasons of his show.

In earlier series, he was seen killing snakes and an iguana.

He told BBC Radio 4: “I think in terms of survival and food, definitely in the early days we were killing way too many snakes and stuff like that in the name of survival.

“I’ve moved so far away from that nowadays. It’s always about finding carcasses, bugs and grubs. If you look at great survivors historically they were always the foragers.

“You go after the big game and you take too much risk and you burn too much energy.”
