Pretty Woman, one of the most iconic romantic comedies in Hollywood history, was released way back when in March 1990 but where are the stars of the box office smash hit now?
While the cast has largely gone on to see success in their careers, their personal lives haven’t been so glowing.
They’ve seen divorces, splits just days before their wedding and one even head to deal with the tragic loss of his son, while another gave her kids new names after starting to practise Hinduism.
With the likes of the beautiful Julia Roberts and dashing Richard Gere – who turns 72 today (August 31) – taking the lead roles, it’s impossible not to fall head-over-heels in love with the characters – especially with the unlikely ending of this rom-com.
To celebrate Richard Gere’s birthday, Daily Star is taking a look back at the cast then and now to see how much they’ve changed and how far they’ve come, as well as what’s happened in their lives.
From marriages, divorces, glowing careers and unexpected religious beliefs, the cast of Pretty Woman has been an unproblematic bunch and it’s safe to say fans just adore them.
Julia Roberts as Vivian Ward
Julia Roberts was little known before she played Hollywood prostitute Vivian Ward in Pretty Woman, but she soon became one of Hollywood’s most sought after leading ladies – getting signed for many more box-office smash hits.
In the blockbuster smash, Vivian is enlisted by Edward, a rich and swanky businessman.
Edward pays Vivian to be his companion for an entire week – but the pair end up falling in love in this unlikely love story.
Julia’s performance of Vivian bagged her a Golden Globe and many award nominations too.
After her performance as Vivian, she starred in popular films like Sleeping With the Enemy, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Notting Hill and the ever popular Ocean’s movies.
In 1999 she reunited with Richard Gere, Héctor Elizondo, and Garry Marshall for Runaway Bride.
But Julia didn’t win her first Oscar until she starred in the 2000 movie Erin Brockovich.
Julia has had many romances with high profile Hollywood stars and was engaged to Kiefer Sutherland, but they sadly split three days before their wedding in 1991.
She then went on to marry Lyle Lovett in 1993 before splitting up. She then dated Benjamin Bratt from 1998 to 2001.
The Pretty Woman bombshell married Daniel Moder in 2002 – the pair have three gorgeous kids together. Twins, Hazel and Phinnaeus, who were born in 2004, and son Henry, who they welcomed in 2007.
In 2010, she said that she was Hindu and claimed to be a devotee of the guru Neem Karoli Baba (Maharaj-ji).
After shooting Eat Pray Love, Julia gave her children new names after Hindu gods – Laxmi for Hazel, Ganesh for Phinnaeus and Krishna Balram for Henry.
Richard Gere as Edward Lewis
Richard Gere – who celebrates his 72nd birthday today (August 31) – starred as Edward Lewis, the rich playboy who ends up falling in love with the prostitute he employed for a week, Vivian.
The silver fox went on to star in films like Sommersby, Primal Fear, Arbitrage, Autumn in New York, Unfaithful, and many more.
Richard won a Golden Globe Award for his performance in the 2002 musical Chicago.
His most recent credit was the 2019 series MotherFatherSon.
Richard was married to Cindy Crawford from 1991 until they sadly split in 1995, before he married Carey Lowell in 2002.
He and Carey have a son named Homer together, but they sadly split in 2011 before he married for a third time in 2018 to Alejandra Silva in 2018.
They have two children together.
Laura San Giacomo as Kit De Luca
In Pretty Woman, Laura San Giacomo played Vivian’s best friend and fellow prostitute Kit De Luca.
Sassy, smart and witty, Vivian and Kit were close-knit and rather hilarious together in the movie.
Laura went on to having a glowing career and even landed herself a regular role in the NBC sitcom Just Shoot Me! from 1997 to 2003.
For this role she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress — Television Series Musical or Comedy.
Her most recent credit is for the 2021 film Violet.
Laura was married to Cameron Dye from 1990 to 1998. They have a son, Mason, together. She married Matt Adler in 2000.
Héctor Elizondo as Barnard Thompson
Héctor Elizondo played the sophisticated yet kind hotel manager Barnard Thompson, who acts as a mentor to a young Vivian who is new to Rodeo Drive.
He and Garry Marshall, who directed the film, had a very special and close bond – with Héctor appearing in every single film Garry ever directed.
The kind hotel manager has since had a long and successful career having starred in all 18 films that his friend Garry directed – some of which included Runaway Bride, The Princess Diaries, and Valentine’s Day.
Since 2011 Héctor has played Ed Alzate on the show Last Man Standing. The show is currently in its final season.
He has been married three times in total, and even became a father for the first time at the young age of 19.
His son Rodd was born on September 5, 1956 but sadly passed away in 2017 at the age of 60.
Since 1969, he has been married to Carolee Campbell, an Emmy Award-winning actress, photographer, and publisher. They live in California.
The Hollywood actor is proud of his Latino heritage and does not accept roles that he feels are stereotypical.
Jason Alexander as Phillip Stuckey
Jason Alexander played Edward’s stuck up lawyer, Phillip Stuckey, in the 1990 hit movie.
At the time Pretty Woman was released, Jason was starring as George Costanza in the TV series Seinfeld.
Seinfeld ran from 1989 to 1998, and his stint saw him nominated seven consecutive times for Emmys.
Jason has had a number of voice roles over the years and has also starred in many a TV show.
He has credits in TV shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm, Dream On, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
When he’s not voice acting or starring in TV shows, he can usually be found performing on the stage.
