BAFTAs 2022 ceremony branded 'inappropriate' by fans amid Russian invasion in Ukraine

The BAFTAs are coming under fire for going ahead with the star-studded event amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine, with some film fans at home choosing not to tune in.

The EE British Academy Film Awards 2022 is taking place tonight at The Royal Albert Hall in London, and is taking place in order to honour the best British and international contributions to film.

With the film and cinema industries bouncing back after the global Coronavirus pandemic, tonight marks a monuments night in the movie industry – but some fans are “not comfortable” about the ceremony.

Taking to Twitter, one person penned: “And the award for the most inappropriate ceremony goes to…… BAFTA. Ukraine is being subjected to war crimes and being razed to the ground, and we have luvvies prancing around in expensive frocks.”

Celebrity guests were urged to tone down their outfits amid the invasion

Another added: “I’m sorry I can’t watch the #BAFTAs this evening, nothing against them & those involved but I am not comfortable watching celebratory stuff with the knowledge of what is going on in #Ukraine – the west need to be doing more & stop ignoring the fire that’s licking at its door.”

While a third said: “Great, wearing a badge is going to help . How many refugees will they be taking in to their homes?”

Hundreds of Ukrainians have been killed amid the invasion, with millions fleeing the country

This comes as celebrity guests at the BAFTAs were warned they should ditch the glitzy frocks and opt for dark colours in order to show respect for Ukraine amid the ongoing invasion.

Hundreds of Ukrainian people have been killed since Russia attacked the country last month, which is why some fans are unimpressed that such a joyous event should take place.

A source told The Sun on Sunday: “Several senior showbiz agents have advised stars to dress respectably, amid fears attention-grabbing dresses and suits would appear distasteful in light of the Ukraine conflict.

“The last thing they want is something like Lady Gaga’s infamous meat dress or anything too controversial.”

The chairman of BAFTA, Krishnendu Majumdar, has since said that the academy cannot “shy away from world events” and said they “stand firmly and squarely with the people of Ukraine.”

It comes as nominee Benedict Cumberbatch said he hopes to house refugees from Ukraine, admitting to Sky News on the red carpet: “We all need… to do more than wear a badge. We need to donate, we need to pressure our politicians to continue to create some kind of a refugee safety and a haven here for people who are suffering.

“Everyone needs to do as much as they can… there’s been a record number of people volunteering to take people into their homes, I hope to be part of that myself.”
