Bake Off judge Prue Leith left 28 people in 'critical care' after massive food error

Prue Leith claims she nearly killed 30 people towards the beginning of her career.

The Great British Bake Off star is known for her inspired antics in the baking talent competition which include her cheery disposition and love of tipple in sweet dishes.

But at an event, the TV personality claimed at an event in Bath that things didn’t go as smoothly at the beginning of her career.

The 82-year-old took to the stage as part of her Nothing in Moderation UK tour where she admitted that she had a disastrous event at the beginning of her career.

Prue’s company, Leith’s Good Food, catered an event where she admits 28 people ended up in hospital with one man left in critical condition after she served an inedible chicken mayonnaise.

She exclaimed: “You can’t be in catering for 30 years without something going disastrously wrong.”

The cookery writer revealed her company was asked to make up the chicken dish for 25 people on an exceptionally hot day.

However, more guests were added to the event which led to disaster after the venue they worked at also had no proper refrigeration, meaning the food was left out for longer.

The broadcaster told the present crowd: “The cooks poached another chicken while the flesh was still warm, which is a crime, and they mixed with the chicken that was already there”.

Prue continued: “This chicken sat there and lunch was very late and we managed to poison everybody.”

The former restaurateur admitted that she was left traumatized by the experience, one she would never forget because of the status of some of the people involved.

Prue explained: “It haunts me that episode as everybody was ill, ‘All 30 people but two of them ended up in the hospital and one of them was in critical care as he was very old and was a High Court judge”.

She added: “He could have ended up in the morgue and not in the hospital. That was a wake-up call.”
