BBC Breakfast fans have hit back at Naga Munchetty after the TV presenter appeared to defend Boris Johnson over the controversial partygate scandal during an interview with Liberal Democrat deputy leader Daisy Cooper.
Earlier this month, the Prime Minister was issued a fine for breaking the law while attending a series of social gatherings at 10 Downing Street while the country had imposed a slew of strict lockdown measures.
He has since come under intense scrutiny from the public, with many MP’s demanding Mr Johnson to resign as further investigations are being held into his social activities throughout 2020.
But during Friday’s (April 22) instalment of the popular BBC One morning show, the 47-year-old came under fire after she appeared to defend the Prime Minister during a heated discussion with the Daisy Cooper.
On the show, the broadcaster and her co-host Ben Thompson welcomed the politician onto to show to discuss the impact of his breach of lockdown rules during the peak of pandemic.
The MP explained her reasons for why she feels that the Mr Johnson should step down after he broke the lockdown rules or take responsibility for his actions.
She argued: “The problem is when the Prime Minister was found out he continued to lie and then lie again and then lie again.
“Here we are many months later in the cost of living crisis …,” she continued.
It was at this point that Naga interrupted: “You know this is a very explosive accusation to accuse the Prime Minister of lying.
“Let’s be very clear, what specifically do you thing the Prime Minister has lied about?”
The MP replied: “There are a number of occasions when the Prime Minister appeared in front of Parliament and said no parties took place and said he’s been given assurances that no such things had happened.
“And we now know from the interim Sue Gray report that there were a number of gatherings, many leaving parties in No 10 and there are allegations the Prime Minister attended a number of them.”
It was at this point that Naga hit back: “Only one has been proven though, hasn’t it? That was at a gathering and he has given his explanation saying he believes he’d not broken the rules at the time.
“His interpretation of the rules was different but he said he also accepts Metropolitan Police’s fired penalty notice,” she added.
The politician argued: “The fact is the public have made their minds up. The Prime Minister made up the rules, he then broke the rules, he then made repeated denials and now he has been found guilty of a criminal sanction.
“And now his own party, his own Government have refused to intervene in the process yesterday and they are allowing an inquiry now into whether the Prime Minister deliberately missed Parliament.”
The heated interview quickly sparked fury with viewers who swarmed to social media to share their thoughts online.
One user penned: “Looked like Naga Defending Boris there … And rude interviewing… not nice #BBCBreakfast.”
Another agreed: “Totally…Naga made me throw up in my mouth a little…”
A third viewer went on to accuse the broadcaster of “brown-nosing” the Prime Minister, tweeting: “Totally. She was on full attack mode there!”
