BBC Breakfast host Nina Warhurst’s life – soap star past, house woes and bikini snap

Nina Warhurst has certainly made an impression on BBC Breakfast viewers in recent weeks, stepping in for regular hosts including Naga Munchetty and Sally Nugent during the festive period.

But aside from her career as a newsreader, Nina’s life off-camera is just as exciting as her life in the spotlight.

And even the keenest of fans may not be aware that she actually began her work in the TV industry as an actress in various hit soaps, including Casualty and Heartbeat.

From her adorable husband and kids to the renovations Nina is undertaking at her impressive new property, Daily Star delves deeper into the journalist’s life away from the limelight.

Sweet family

Nina met her husband Ted while in Croatia, and they finally tied the knot in 2014.

Ted has his own private catering business, Fed by Ted, which operates in Manchester and London and serves various delicious-looking dishes.

Nina regularly shares sweet snaps of the pair together, including a rather special date night selfie in which Nina attempted to kiss her husband’s cheek while they posed for the camera.

She wrote alongside the snap: “Marry someone who makes you get out of the cab early so the driver can avoid roadworks and get to his next job.

“Marry someone who stays up late with you drinking bourbon and listening to Johnny Cash.

“Marry someone who effortlessly teaches you about kindness and patience by example.”

The presenter went on: “Marry someone who loves multiple carbs as much as you do. Marry @fedbyted1 (unlucky – I did!).”

Nina added: “A wonderful evening with my best person, at my best place. My heart and belly are full of happy.”

Dan Walker feud

Nina and co-host Dan Walker were involved in a rather awkward on-screen feud in December last year, as Dan appeared to make a jibe about Nina’s weight.

Discussing Royal Mail updates for the Christmas period, reporter Ben Boulos told Dan and Nina in the studio: “Nina and Dan, I thought what better way than to wrap a little Christmas parcel from me to you.

“I had a look around my flat and I found a little box of chocolates and I’ve lovingly wrapped it.

“I say a box of chocolate, it’s literally the box, the chocolates have been consumed already, but it’s Christmas it’s the thought that counts, right?”

Nina cheekily replied: “Absolutely, I will definitely be hot-footing it in the office on Christmas day in order to collect that empty box. Thank you, Ben.”

Dan then put his foot promptly in his mouth as he responded: “It keeps the weight down as well knowing there’s not any chocolate in it!”, as Nina demanded: “What are you saying?”

A guilty looking Dan was clearly panicking as he insisted: “No, not your weight!”

He then went on to apologise to the star, adding: “Get out, get out while you can. It’s time now for the news, travel and the weather while I apologise profusely to Nina.”

Though Nina shared a giggle at the exchange, she told him: “It’s too late!” for sorry.

Soap star past

Nina actually began her career as an actress, with her first role coming in the form of BBC medical soap Casualty back in 1997.

Before that, she appeared in various local pantomimes.

She played Lisa Davies in the Christmas episode The Golden Hour while she was just 17 years old, and attending sixth form at her home near Manchester.

Speaking to What’s On and Leisure in 1998, Nina explained: “At first I was very nervous but all the cast and crew were very friendly and helpful.”

Nina then went on to appear in Heartbeat’s 1998 Valentine’s Day episode as Linda, one of three friends who get stalked on their way to a dance.

She said of the role: “It was great fun. The first night away the other two girls and I were given a hotel room together so we had to get on, but we did.

“We had to use Yorkshire accents for the part – one of the girls was from Halifax so we spent a lot of time talking to her.”

Nina’s final acting role came just a year later, when she appeared in the TV movie Butterfly Collectors as Chrissy.

Bikini snap

Clearly in the mood for some end of summer fun last September, Nina couldn’t help posting a cheeky snap of her chilling in a hot tub with a close pal.

Nina explained that the pair had attended a convent school together and thus were “bonded for life”.

The pair could be seen sticking their legs up in the air while they relaxed in swimwear in the bubbles, both raising a glass of cocktail together as Nina threw her head back in laughter.

The star had her shoulders and collarbone on full display as she stunned in the rainbow-coloured swimsuit, emblazoned with palm trees.

Captioning the snap, Nina posted: “Convent girls stick together.

“What is it about the humiliation of cream tights, the terrifying teachers, the freezing classrooms & perpetual sense of guilt that is so bonding for life!?

“Nobody I’d rather be cocktailing my way out of 8/10 hangover with.”

Home woes

Nina was forced to move her family in with her mum

Nina shared her anguish with her 11,200 Instagram followers as she made her sixth move in just seven years, moving with her family from their Salford-based flat to a new house.

In October 2021, Nina shared a snap of the empty flat, explaining: “Cloth drop! Our sixth move in seven years. Man. Moving is HARD.

“Today I cried twice, had an angry nap on a sheetless mattress – like a writhing scene from Trainspotting, Ed threw a dirty cloth at me (not in cute flirty way… we were arguing about who is most miserable with life) and I got stuck in a traffic jam for 90 minutes trying to make sure some pies from the freezer for my Grandad weren’t wasted.”

The devastated broadcaster went on to explain that the family were forced to camp out at her mum’s house, elaborating: “Wish there was a happy ending photo with us in our new house – alas it’s nowhere near ready & we are camping at my Mum’s.

“Anyway – much to be grateful for. Like the chance to escape to work. See you tomorrow 0600-1000 on BBC1.

“Be lovely if you could join us / lend me your caravan!”

Nina also shared some snaps of the shell of her new home, with Nina hilariously chalking the outline of a bar on the wall of her soon-to-be bathroom – complete with cartoon wine glasses.

The star wrote: “Renovation magnitude sending me under before realising there is the perfect space for a corner bar in the bathroom. No I ain’t kidding!”

The new home also includes an impressive marble fireplace with a huge mirror above it in what looks set to be the living room. In one snap, Nina could be seen posing beside it with a bottle of champagne in hand, grinning as she gazed around her new home.

Nina posted: “And we’re *IN* our new house. In a truly shocking chain of events – the estate agent was really helpful, the solicitors were efficient, the vendors were lovely & left us bubbles to wish us luck… They must’ve missed the 2020/21 memo.”
