BBC Breakfast presenter Jon Kay shuts down co-star in tense Naga Munchetty row

BBC Breakfast turned tense on Thursday morning (February 17) as presenter Jon Kay shut down his co-star in an awkward row.

Jon was joined by co-presenter Naga Munchetty and sports correspondent Mike Bushell on the red sofa to discuss the sporting issues of the day – including the ongoing Winter Olympics.

Mike began by telling his co-stars: “Team GB have a huge chance of guaranteeing a medal…”

But Naga soon interrupted: “Well, you’ve said this…” as Mike finished: “I know, A fair few times, but this is it because they do have their semi-final against the USA at lunchtime today.”

Mike continued to explain his reasoning, adding: “Now the Brits have only lost one of their nine matches, and yes, that was to the USA.”

“Oh Mike, Mike!” Jon moaned, as Naga struggled to find the words to express what she was thinking.

“But there’s hope!” Mike insisted, adding: “They’re in better form than they were in the Round Robin match because they’re top of the group, their tails are up, they’ve got the form and momentum. Momentum is everything in sport!”

But Naga wasn’t impressed, as she said: “Your narrative over the Winter Olympics has been fabulous – because in the early days it was, ‘Naga – too early! You know, we started late last time, we did really well. It’s too early Naga, hold your horses – don’t be so impatient.

“And then I think last week it was, ‘Well, there’s hope!’

“And what was it today?”

Mike replied: “We’re building up for a grand finale now.”

As Naga quoted him: “‘Tails are up, there’s hope!’ It’s not that we don’t want them to do brilliantly…”

“Get into that final and you’re guaranteed gold or silver – it’s there to be grabbed now! Seized!” Mike told her.

But as Naga asked: “Are you in tomorrow?” and Mike answered in the affirmative, Jon was on hand to brutally shut his co-star down.

“Oh no, Mike – don’t! No, no, no, Mike – positivity and enthusiasm is what we all need!” he snapped.
