BBC Breakfast’s resident weather presenter Carol Kirkwood has announced she is engaged to her “extremely handsome” partner.
It comes after plenty of BBC Breakfast fans spotted her wearing a glitzy silver ring on her ring finger – leaving plenty of speculation on social media.
And after a while, as Carol continued to present the weather from the Chelsea Flower Show for BBC Breakfast, presenter Sally Nugent couldn’t help but quiz her on it.
She told a beaming Carol: “I’m a little bit concerned about you this morning. I don’t know how you’re managing to stand up with that giant rock on your left hand, Carol!” as her co-star Jon Kay collapsed into giggles.
Glancing down at her hand, Carol joked: “Oh, that one? Thank you Sal! It is rather nice, I got engaged.”
Sally gushed: “Congratulations from all of us! It’s the happiest news, we are so, so delighted. Congratulations.”
But she then appeared to backtrack, asking Carol: “Can we confirm to the nation what’s happened?”
Thankfully, a giggling Carol said: “Yes! I think you just have, Sal. Yes, I got engaged. We got engaged when we were on holiday. So it’s lovely news and we’re both thrilled, so thank you!”
Jon then interjected: “We’re all thrilled, we’re all so chuffed for you Carol, on behalf of all the team here and everybody watching, I’m sure. Absolutely delighted.”
The cast and crew then erupted into applause, as Jon joked: “Are you looking for a spot for the marquee while you’re at Chelsea, yeah?”
Sally joked at Carol’s silence: “She’s not giving anything away!”, as the weather presenter said: “I’m taking note of all the flowers, Jon. But no, there’s no plans in fruit yet.”
Sally then said: “Congratulations Carol, we love you both. It’s brilliant, brilliant news.”
Back in the studio, Sally admitted she’d known about the engagement “for a while”, adding: “It’s been really hard. I managed to keep that secret.”
Jon explained: “Sally spotted the ring in the first hit we went to Carol at about six o’clock, and you were like ‘ding!’ She’s wearing it! Well spotted.”
Sally said: “We’re going to have a BBC Breakfast wedding, everyone!” before joking she’d have to find a hat suitable for the occasion.
Carol has kept her mystery partner out of the spotlight for the most part, explaining upon the release of her debut novel Under a Greek Moon: “I don’t want to say too much about my boyfriend, but I will say that he is very kind and very funny – he’s always making me laugh. And extremely handsome, as well!”
She added to Prima Magazine: “He always makes me a cup of tea before I go to work in the morning, which is very romantic – it’s 2.45am!
“And he often leaves me a little love note for when I come home from work.
“That, to me, is worth a million red roses.”
BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One.
