BBC Breakfast's Carol Kirkwood insulted as co-star implies she could 'wipe out audience'

BBC Breakfast weather presenter Carol Kirkwood was left insulted on Wednesday (February 16) as her co-star agreed she could “wipe out” the programme’s audience entirely.

With Jon Kay and Nina Warhurst once again settled on the red sofa in place of regular hosts Dan Walker and Sally Nugent, the programme was ticking along nicely.

But Carol was soon left red-faced by Jon’s remarks, as he suggested they skip over the weather forecast for the next few days.

With Storm Dudley and Storm Eunice quickly approaching, things aren’t looking sunny on the weather front – and Jon is clearly braced for more bad news.

Things kicked off when Nina announced: “Let’s have a chat with Carol and a look at this morning’s weather, because we’ve been saying this morning – the storms are coming and are going to set in!”

Jon joked: “Do we have to do the weather for the next couple of days?”

Nina insisted: “Yes, because we love seeing Carol, Jon!”

Jon continued: “Stay in and forget it! Carol can sing a song or something instead!”

Collapsing into giggles herself, Carol replied: “Oh my goodness, I would absolutely wipe out our audience if I did that!”

And Jon couldn’t help agreeing with her as he retracted his earlier comments, telling Carol: “Actually, maybe not. Maybe not.”

“Oh, thanks Jon!” Carol hit back at her co-star. “Hmm. Moving on swiftly!”

Carol then quickly turned her attention to the – predictably chilly – weather forecast for the day.

As her segment reached its conclusion, Carol vowed she’d be back with a longer report later in the programme, as Jon agreed: “We’re going to need a longer weather forecast, aren’t we? There’s a lot to say! Carol, thank you.”

Carol took it all in good humour

Nina then turned to her co-host to scold him: “You might not like it, but it’s important to know, Jon – like lots of the news.”

There was more bad news to come, as the show turned to the new inflation rates and rapidly rising cost of living.

It came after the show descended into chaos, when one guest’s phone went off in the middle of an interview.

Jon and Nina were chatting to Stuart McKenzie and Petro Rewko about the Ukraine-Russia tensions when Stuart’s phone started ringing – leaving Jon to quickly remedy the situation.

He quipped: “We’ll come back to you in a minute. Somebody’s phoning you to tell you you’re on the telly, I think!”

BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One.
