BBC Breakfast's Dan Walker cuts off Ukrainian singer as she drops F-bomb on air

BBC Breakfast host Dan Walker was forced to cut off a Ukrainian singer after she dropped the F-bomb on air.

The BBC presenter was forced to interrupt Ukrainian star Maria Burmaka as she swore at Russian president Vladimir Putin during a heated message for the leader.

Worried Dan immediately apologised to viewers for her explicit language during Wednesday’s breakfast show (March 2) as the singer’s F-bomb came way before the TV watershed.

However, many BBC viewers were fuming at Dan’s apology as they felt it was wholly unnecessary given the severity of the singer’s situation as a resident in Ukraine – after Russia launched attacks across the country.

Famous singer Maria has been keeping spirits up in Ukraine’s capital city of Kyiv during the war by singing the Ukrainian national anthem to locals from her apartment window.

Dan asked Maria if she’d considered trying to escape her war-torn country in a bid to save herself from the violence.

The musician replied that she was planning on staying in the capital and will keep on singing to locals as long as it was safe to do so – adding: “I will not run from my native city because this is my home”.

She then sent a powerful message to Russian president Putin where she called him a “murderer” and told him “f**k you”, but it threw the segment into chaos as Dan needed to intervene.

Maria said: “I want to say to Putin. You are a murderer, you are [an] aggressor.”, adding that Ukraine was never against Russia.

She went on: “Russian singers, Russian sportsmen were in Kiev. Many people are going to Kiev. i studied at school in Kharkov and I studied at Russian school….”

Maria then begn: “You are a [unknown] in our country, and like our soldiers say…” before speaking in Ukrainian, which she translated to mean: “F**k you.”

Stepping in after the swear word, Dan cried: “Oh, Maria. Sorry, Maria. I really understand the depth of feeling. I’ve got to apologise to our viewers for the language there.”

Maria looked gutted at Dan’s intervention as she looked away from the screen, and she tried to continue her message.

However, Dan swiftly moved the segment on and said: “Thank you so much for talking to us, keep singing, and please stay safe as well, and just once again, apologies for the language there.

He sympathetically added: “But I’m sure you can understand how strong Maria’s feelings are.”

BBC viewers were fuming at Dan’s apology as many of them felt it was not needed, given Maria’s situation as a Ukrainian resident in a war-torn country.

One fan wrote: “There’s no apology required @mrdanwalker is an entirely fair comment on Putin.”

A second fumed: “sorry @mrdanwalker you got that very wrong on #BBCBreakfast. A lady swears in a passionate description of what’s going on in Ukraine, and you stop her speaking.

“I think most people sympathise with her, and were applauding everything she said. You should have let her carry on.”

A third claimed: “Got to love that the beeb cares more about bad language than people living in terror from #UkraineRussiaWar nice…”

A fourth said: “When you criticise someone in Kyiv for swearing and stop the interview is the point at which I switch you off. Stop being so prissy.”

It comes as a huge convoy of Russian troops are reportedly moving in on the Ukrainian city after cities across the country were bombarded overnight – with at least 21 people killed.
