BBC Breakfast's Dan Walker hits back as co-host Sally Nugent mocks his television stint

BBC Breakfast star Dan Walker playfully hit back at Sally Nugent as she made a dig about his former TV stint.

Sally, 50, made the cheeky dig towards Dan, 44, while the pair discussed Kate Middleton’s upcoming debut on Cbeebies Bedtime Stories.

The Duchess of Cambridge, 40, is set to appear on a special edition of the popular children’s programme that features a different celebrity reading a bedtime story each week.

Ed Sheeran, Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Reynolds have all previously made appearances on the BBC show as well as Dan himself.

Sally told viewers during Tuesday’s show: “If you’ve ever watched CBeebies Bedtime Stories, you’ll know they’ve had some incredible people read their stories.

She later turned to Dan and said: “I mean, some quite ordinary people read them aswell.

“What you saying?” He asked his co-host before flashing a cheeky grin.

Sally added: “They’ve got a really special one now. Their first Royal signing.”

Dan continued: “The Duchess of Cambridge will fill the slot this Sunday.

“She’s going to read The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark by Jill Tomlinson. She’s making a special appearance to mark Children’s Mental Health Week.”

Former Strictly Come Dancing contestant Dan later got distracted by Kate’s outfit in her promotional snap for her upcoming TV appearance.

“Nifty Christmas jumper there,” he said.

Sally added: “Yeah looks very cosy.”

Kate Middleton is set to make her debut on Cbeebies Bedtime Stories

The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark follows the story of Plop, a baby barn owl, who is helped by others to overcome his fears and boost his confidence.

The classic children’s book ties into this year’s Children’s Mental Health Week theme: “Growing Together.”

In a promo shot of her upcoming appearance, Kate is dressed casually in a pair of jeans and a sweater as she smiles from the set of the show.

In a statement, Patricia Hidalgo, Director of BBC Children’s and Education, said: “I couldn’t be more proud to have The Duchess read a CBeebies Bedtime Story as we mark the 20th anniversary of our CBeebies and CBBC channels.

“It’s such a special and relevant tale and perfectly represents this years’ Children’s Mental Health Week theme.

“I can’t wait to see her deliver her own take on such a classic story and I’m sure our audience can’t either.”

Kate, who is married to Prince William, has had years of bedtime story practice with her own three kids — Prince George, eight, Princess Charlotte, six and three-year-old Prince Louis.
