BBC Breakfast's Jon Kay left red-faced as he suffers pooey wardrobe blunder live on-air

BBC Breakfast presenter Jon Kay was left red-faced on Monday (July 18) as he suffered a major wardrobe blunder live on the programme.

Jon was presenting on location in Cambridge to warn viewers of the extreme heat expected across the UK, with temperatures reaching 41 degrees Celsius in parts of the country.

Weather presenter Carol Kirkwood was also out and about in Central London, while only Nina Warhurst held down the fort at the Media City-based BBC studios.

And on what was Jon’s official first day on the job after landing what used to be Dan Walker’s permanent role on the programme – after contracting Covid-19 left him homebound last week – his experience was unfortunately marred by excrement.

Busy presenting the show, Jon couldn’t help but bring things to a halt when a bird unceremoniously pooed on his linen jacket.

Turning to Carol, a flustered Jon asked: “Carol, have you got any tips for removing bird poo from linen jackets? Because I’ve just been splatted by a pigeon.”

Carol simply burst into laughter at his admission, before gathering herself enough to say: “Try one of these wet wipe things – it might spread it a wee bit, but if you use a few…”

Looking completely unimpressed by Carol’s tips, Jon said: “It could get messy, couldn’t it? I’m slightly anxious about doing this. I’ve also got another jacket – maybe we’ll go for that option for now and hit the dry cleaners a bit later!”

Bird poo ruined the collar of Jon’s jacket

Jon continued to pat himself down with a tissue, but looked despairingly at the camera when the stain simply wouldn’t come off.

He later said: “Right, I’m going off to dab my jacket, we’ll try and get that sorted. In the meantime – I’m just glad it wasn’t a swan, to be honest. It was just a pigeon.”

His co-star Nina Warhurst encouraged him: “Jon, it might not feel it right now, but bear in mind that that delivery is considered good luck!”

“Yeah, but not for my jacket,” Jon pouted, as Nina quipped: “Not feeling the fortune this morning? Jon, we look forward to seeing what you change into.”

He wasn’t impressed by his co-stars’ suggestions

Later, Jon was wearing his usual navy blazer with a light blue shirt, having ditched the beige linen jacket which seemed more suited to a sunny day.

But he left viewers at home baffled as to why he didn’t simply remove the jacket altogether, given the extreme temperatures.

One fan penned in response: “Maybe just take jacket off? Really no need in this heat for a jacket!”

As another echoed: “Serves him right for wearing a jacket on the hottest day of the year, whilst reporting all morning how hot it is…”

Others did have more practical advice for Jon, as one viewer chipped in: “They say its lucky to be pooped on! Put the jacket in a bag and put in fridge for it to harden, scrap off and use bicarb to get stain out.”

“@carolkirkwood is correct – wet wipes to the rescue!” another echoed, while a third fan penned: “I would suck with vacuum cleaner to remove the the debris & then use 1/vinegar & 1/2 water to clean & kill germs.”

BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One.
