BBC Breakfast's Nina Warhurst 'weeping' as Charlie Stayt says 'it feels all wrong'

BBC Breakfast star Nina Warhurst confessed she was “weeping” upon realising the amount of food that is wasted during the festive period.

The presenter, 42, helmed the morning programme with Charlie Stayt and the pair made the jaw-dropping revelation that food waste goes up by around 80% over Christmas.

They were joined by Matt who was live from Reading and was stood in front of a huge pile of food waste – which he admitted smelt “quite fresh” after Nina voiced concern about the smell.

Matt then shared his own statistics which blew the minds of the duo sat on the red sofa.

He said: “Every single year, the amount of poultry that is thrown away in a year could make enough for 800 million Boxing Day curry’s.”

“The amount of potatoes thrown away annually in the UK could produce Christmas Day roasties for the whole of the country for the next 48 years,” he added.

Matt did assure that while it is a clear problem, it’s a problem being solved because the food waste is being turned into compost.

Nina could be heard saying: “Matt, I am weeping over here about the news that so many spuds are going in the bin. Who would bin a potato?”

Back in the studio, the newsreader turned to her co-host and admitted she was “surprised” about how many people are throwing away food at this point, given it’s only been a few days since Christmas Day.

“Yes, it feels all wrong,” agreed Charlie.

This is Nina’s second day back on air following a nasty illness she picked up over the festive period, however she took to Twitter on Tuesday (December 27) evening and assured she was recovering.

She wrote: “Thank you for your very kind wishes. Full recovery complete and ready for BBC Breakfast tomorrow to share my full Christmas nutrition guide with Jon Kay.”
