BBC's Deborah James tearful as she says she's had 'hard conversations' about death

BBC star Deborah James battled tears as she told how she’s had “hard conversations” about dying this week.

The podcast star was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2016 and this week penned a moving goodbye message on social media as she revealed she had moved to hospice care.

Deborah, 40, who has now returned home to her mum and dad’s house, said on BBC Breakfast: “I’ve had some really hard conversations during the last week.

“You think, ‘Gosh, how can anyone have those conversations?’ and then you find yourself in the middle of them. And people are very nice, but you’re talking about your own death and I’ve had five years to prepare for my death.”

“It’s really hard,” added the star, who is mum to son Hugo, 14, and 12-year-old daughter Eloise.

“The thing that I know, because I trust my husband – he’s just the most wonderful man and so is my family and I know that my kids are going to be more than looked after and surrounded by love.

“You always want to know as a mother, are your kids going to be OK? And my kids are going to be fine. But it doesn’t mean I’m not going to miss every chance I could have had with them.”

Deborah told her fans on Instagram this week that her body “just can’t continue any more”.

“My active care has stopped and I am now moved to hospice at home care, with my incredible family all around me and the focus is on making sure I’m not in pain and spending time with them,” she said.

Opening up further on her podcast You, Me And The Big C, she said that she had gone home to her mum and dad’s house.

“It’s where I’ve kind of always wanted to die, weirdly,” said Deborah.

“I’ve kind of always had that it my mind.”

Deborah also said she hoped that being there would mean that her children could go back there and not have “those kind of medical equipment scars”.

“It can continue to be their home without those memories which might possibly be a good thing,” she said.
