BGT star Darcy Oake took inspiration from horror films for death-defying stunt

Britain’s Got Talent star Darcy Oake revealed he took inspiration from the horror film, Saw, for one of his dangerous stunts.

The 34-year-old, who rose to fame in 2014 after wowing the world with his jaw-dropping dove illusion, came fifth overall in the ITV talent show.

After his first audition, which has been viewed by 123 million people on YouTube, judge Simon Cowell said he was “the best magician” they’d ever had in the competition.

The illusionist later became known for his daredevil stunts after upping the stakes in the final when he successfully escaped a death-defying bear trap with only seconds remaining.

In an exclusive chat with Daily Star, Darcy explained how he was always looking for new material and took inspiration from the gruesome horror franchise, Saw.

“After the bear trap, we were working on this bit where I would get my head locked in a tank of water, it was similar to what Andrew basso did on this year of BGT but we were working on a different style of that where it was just a tank of water that my head would go in as opposed to being hoisted in.”

He continued: “It was this really creepy saw-esque thing.”

Referencing the water cube trap from the fifth Saw film, Darcy said: “Exactly that – that’s where the inspiration came from.”

He went on to admit that performing risky stunts like that in front of a live audience remains in the back of his mind for the entirety of his shows while on tour.

The dad-of-one said: “When you do those types of things on tour, it’s in the back of your mind the whole time because for a one off thing like Britain’s Got Talent, you’re like ‘Okay, I’m doing this on this date at this time, I hope it goes well and that’s that.”

“But then when you’re doing it 12, 13, 14 times in a row, it becomes this is never ending stress like ‘oh god I have to do it again tonight,” he joked.

He went on to say that he has huge respect for anyone that performs life-threatening stunts because it takes its toll both physically and mentally.

“You’re getting into this sort of rhythm during the performance but it’s always in the back of your mind so just lingers and it eats away at you for sure, which is why I respect anybody who does stuff like that because it’s not easy, physically and mentally.”
