Prince Harry shocked the world last year with a series of candid revelations.
Following he and wife Meghan Markle’s internet-breaking interview with Oprah Winfrey in March, the Royal sat down for a more intimate chat with Oprah for a new Apple TV+ documentary.
Titled The Me You Can’t See, the series aired in May and saw the Duke of Sussex open up about a number of topics in greater detail while talking one-on-one with the former talk show host.
From his late mother Diana’s tears to Meghan’s suicidal thoughts, nothing was off the table.
Daily Star takes a look at the biggest bombshells from Prince Harry’s The Me You Can’t See interviews.
Drink and drugs past
It’s fair to say that before settling down with Meghan, Prince Harry had a party boy reputation.
Speaking to Oprah, Harry explained that his willingness to drink and take drugs in previous years was an attempt to “mask” his unresolved grief for his late mother Diana and to help him deal with the pressures of being in the public eye.
Harry said: “I was willing to drink, willing to take drugs.
“I was willing to do the things that made me feel less like I was feeling.
“But I slowly became aware that, okay, I wasn’t drinking Monday to Friday but I would probably drink a week’s worth in one day on a Friday or a Saturday night.
“And I was finding myself drinking not because I was enjoying it, but because I was trying to mask something.”
Of that period, he added: “I was just all over the place mentally.”
Diana tears
During the heartbreaking interview, Harry also opened up about his memories of his late mother.
He explained to Oprah that when it came to thinking about memories of his mother, he could recall the “same one, over and over again.”
The harrowing memory was that of Harry witnessing Diana’s tears as she was hounded by paparazzi while collecting he and Prince William from school.
Harry said: “Strapped in the car, seatbelt across, with my brother in the car as well, and my mother driving, being chased by three, four, five mopeds with paparazzi on, and she was always unable to drive because of tears.
“There was no protection.”
Meghan row
While Harry and Meghan present a united front, The Me You Can’t See viewers were surprised to hear Harry explain one of he and Meghan’s biggest rows.
During the candid chat, Harry explained that the fear of losing Meghan had driven him to seek therapy after she made the suggestion during “an argument” the couple had.
Harry explained: “When [Meghan] said, ‘I think you need to see someone,’ it was in reaction to an argument that we had.
“And in that argument not knowing about it, I reverted back to 12-year-old Harry.”
Of the spat, Harry later added: “I felt somewhat ashamed and defensive. Like, ‘How dare you? You’re calling me a child.’
“And she goes, ‘No, I’m not calling you a child. I’m expressing sympathy and empathy for you for what happened to you when you were a child. You never processed it. You were never allowed to talk about it and all of a sudden now it’s coming up in different ways as projection.’
“That was the start of a learning journey for me.
“I became aware that I’d been living in a bubble within this family, within this institution and I was sort of almost trapped in a thought process or a mindset.”
Prince Charles spat
Over recent years, Harry’s relationship with his father Prince Charles has become increasingly strained.
The Royal went someway into explaining how his feelings towards Charles had changed during his The Me You Can’t See Chat.
Father-of-two Harry told Oprah that becoming a dad himself and going through therapy had led him to question the cycle of negativity he felt subjected to by Charles while growing up as a young Royal.
Harry said: “My father used to say to me when I was younger, he used to say to both William and I: ‘Well, it was like that for me so it’s going to be like that for you.’
“That doesn’t make sense.
“Just because you suffered, that doesn’t mean your kids have to suffer. In fact, quite the opposite.
“If you suffered, do everything you can to make sure that whatever negative experiences you had, you can make it right for your kids.”
He later added: “Isn’t this all about breaking the cycle? Isn’t this all about making sure that history doesn’t repeat itself?”
