Coleen Rooney is arguably the most famous footballer WAG in the UK, having been married to Wayne Rooney since 2008.
Two years prior, in 2006, Coleen, 35, and the other footballers’ wives and girlfriends stole plenty of the limelight from their sportsmen other halves at the World Cup in Germany.
Their antics saw them splashed across newspapers and the girl next door types thrust into the spotlight, with many becoming just as famous as their partners – if not more.
During the 2006 World Cup they were seen to be close friends, laughing and enjoying their time as they supported their men – but that doesn’t mean things are always rosy, as Daily Star discovers.
‘Wagatha Christie’
Perhaps the biggest WAG feud to date is the “Wagatha Christie” scandal which started in October 2019 between Coleen Rooney and Rebekah Vardy, which is still ongoing.
The WAGs found themselves caught in the middle of a very public feud as Coleen tactically tried to catch out an alleged mole on her Instagram profile.
The two women have been urged to sort the matter between themselves to avoid sky-rocketing legal costs but an ongoing libel legal battle is still taking place.
The two women originally became friends through their link between their footballer husbands.
Coleen tweeted out in October 2019, accusing Rebekah’s Instagram account of leaking personal information from her private Instagram account to the tabloids.
After her suspicions, she blocked everyone aside from Rebekah’s account from her Instagram stories and began posting fake information to see if it would be leaked.
As Rebekah’s account was the only one able to see her stories she believed she would then have clarification.
She wrote: “I have saved and screenshotted all the original stories which clearly show just one person has viewed them. It’s…Rebekah Vardy’s account.”
Rebekah claims that “various people” had access to her account and said: “I’m not being funny, but I don’t need the money. What would I gain from selling stories on you?”
Vardy then launched a lawsuit on Rooney, who earned the nickname “Wagatha Christie”.
In November 2020, Mr Justice Warby ruled in favour of Rebekah after a libel preliminary hearing, ruling that Coleen’s post would be seen by an “ordinary reader” as a clear allegation rather than as “reasonable grounds to suspect”.
Then in July 2021, Coleen won another round of the case, in which they argued that Vardy’s alleged close relationship with The Sun was “one of the building blocks” of the case, after Vardy’s team had argued the authorship of the paper’s Secret Wag column was irrelevant to the trial.
Posh Spice’s Cheryl snub
Cheryl Cole and Victoria Beckham became very close during the 2006 World Cup as they cheered on their partners from the sidelines, but after claims that Cheryl’s husband Ashley Cole had cheated, something which he has never commented on, Cheryl was reportedly very upset with Victoria.
At the time, Cheryl stuck by Ashley and ignored cheating allegations from one woman, however days later more cheating claims from a glamour model emerged.
Cheryl later told Vogue: “Look, Ashley’s young, and he’s got a young mentality for his age anyway. He’s learning. He has a beautiful soul and he’s a really nice guy.”
However more cheating claims emerged in 2010 and Cheryl believed them, as she wrote in her 2012 autobiography that they included details “hardly anybody knew”.
Cheryl went on to get checked for sexually transmitted diseases, and was given the all-clear.
She filed for divorce in 2010, citing “unreasonable behaviour” following the numerous cheating allegations.
But during her heartbreak, Cheryl expected her friend to be by her side but it’s believed Victoria was nowhere to be seen.
Chezza said previously: “David’s mum is friends with Ashley’s mum, she [Victoria] was in my hotel room the whole time during the World Cup – we’ve had barbecues together – so I was quite shocked by that.”
But it seems they cleared things up as, years later, Michael McIntyre sent Victoria a text from Cheryl’s phone during the filming of his TV show.
‘Who let the dogs out?’
Back in 2000, Posh had beef with glamour model Katie Price after she accused the singer of sabotaging her relationship with Dane Bowers.
Victoria wasn’t happy at the comments and when Katie arrived at Old Trafford stadium, she reportedly made a sarcastic gesture towards her.
As she walked in, Victoria called Katie “vile” and sang that year’s hit single Who Let The Dogs Out? by Baha Man in retaliation.
Big Brother bust-up
During Celebrity Big Brother: All-Stars vs New Stars in 2017, Nicola McLean had a few harsh words for Danielle Lloyd.
Nicola was in the reality house with Jamie O’Hara, the ex-husband of Danielle.
Blonde beauty Nicola is married to footballer Tom Williams but took a swipe at Jamie’s ex, saying: “I don’t think any wives or girlfriends would call themselves WAGs.
“If they did, I’d think they were the biggest d***head in the whole entire world.”
Her CBB housemate Austin Armacost asked if she’d ever met any girls who purposely wanted to marry a footballer to become a WAG.
Nicola replied: “No, Jamie did and married one!”
Nicola and Danielle’s feud had started just days before, after Nicola took offence to Danielle calling her new dog Rocky, which was the name of one of Nicola’s sons.
She wrote on social media: “Great name might name my new addition Archie.”
Archie is the name of one of Danielle’s children.
