Bridgerton's Nicola Coughlan reveals embarrassing wardrobe blunder on Netflix set

Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan confessed she suffered a nightmare wardrobe malfunction during her first day on set of the Netflix show.

The Irish actress plays Penelope Featherington in the smash-hit period drama, which was viewed by a whopping 82 million households in its first season.

However, despite her buckets of showbiz success as a part of the show, Nicola revealed she fell over three times during her first ever day on set – because she couldn’t walk in her character’s “crazy” heels.

The star recalled her heel-related accident on BBC’s The One Show on Tuesday night (March 15).

Speaking to hosts Jermaine Jenas and Lauren Laverne, Nicola said she agreed to wear the heels as she was too frightened to get fired from the show, but it soon went terribly wrong.

Jermaine asked: “Is it right you had a little problem putting the heels on?”

Nicola replied: “Oh just a tad, just a tad. So Ellen Mirojnick [the show’s costume designer] on season one said ‘you’re tiny, you’re too small so we’re gonna put you in heels’, and I was just terrified to get fired because I couldn’t believe my luck at getting the job. I said ‘yes, absolutely’.”

The actress then joked if they’d asked her to wear a giant clown suit she would have obliged in order to keep her job.

She went on: “So I agreed to wear these crazy heels, and then on my first day on set we were walking around and I toppled over not once, not twice, but three times.”

A shocked Jermaine cried out: “Three!”, to which Nicola added: “Three times, and I thought they’re going to think I’m drunk, they’re gonna think I’m crazy, and I was holding a dog at the time.”

After reassuring viewers the dog was perfectly okay, she added: “They very quickly realised that that was a no-go, so no more heels for Penelope, sadly!”

The star also explained she left her friends and family fuming after telling them huge show spoilers during the first season of the show.

Although her character was revealed as the mysterious Lady Whistledown at the end of the last series, Coughlan told her nearest and dearest about the ending.

She said: “I just told all my friends and family and they were all fuming with me, and they were like ‘it really ruined the end of it because we just knew.”

However, she explained she’s gotten much better at keeping show secrets to herself for this series.

The second series of Bridgerton is available to stream on Netflix on March 25.
