Britain’s Got Talent fans are still recovering after an invisible ghost appeared on the show and hypnotised Amanda Holden.
The presenter, 51, joked: “It’s always me,” as she was persuaded to join auditionee The Phantom on stage as the new series began in spooky style.
Amanda was left visibly shaken as the red balloon she was holding – similar to that from the horror movie It – burst suddenly of its own accord during the creepy trick.
The radio host, wearing a daring pink latex dress, was unnerved when the ghost menacingly muttered: “They thought it was a gust of wind. It wasn’t. It was me, I stole it.”
After the balloon popped, the unseen spectre added: “You might think it was rather mean to burst a balloon like that, but losing things is an important part of life.”
The ghoulish act really rattled some viewers, but speculation grew online that somebody connected with the show could be behind the routine.
“Me wondering if the ghostly magician on #bgt is @StephenMulhern,” pondered one fan on Twitter.
“@StephenMulhern is the invisible guy on #BGt calling it early and look forward to being shown to be completely wrong in due course,” joked another.
“@BGT Phantom has to be Stephen Mulhern #BGT” said a third viewer.
“Anyone else thinking the invisible man act was @StephenMulhern #BGT” a fourth fan wondered.
“Why do I think the Phantom is Stephen Mulhern,” asked another.
It’s unclear why fans are so convinced that Stephen has been spooking up a storm, but many viewers still miss his spin-off show, Britain’s Got More Talent, which was axed in 2019.
Over the weekend some fans fumed online about the show not returning.
One said: “Britain’s Got More Talent will always be the more superior show. Bring it back!”
A second said: “Why isn’t Britain’s Got More Talent on TV anymore? What a stupid move.”
A third said: “Britain’s Got Talent is nothing without Stephen Mulhern. He’s so funny on In For A Penny.”
Simon Cowell previously told The Sun: “It’s a shame and when it was decided they weren’t going to do the ITV2 version I think the consensus among the boys and judges was this is a massive gap.
