Britney Spears' dad Jamie claims she 'wouldn't be alive' without 13-year conservatorship

Britney Spears ‘ father Jamie has broken his silence over the singer’s conservatorship and claimed it is the only reason his daughter is alive today.

The 70-year-old said the court-imposed intervention saved Britney, now 41, and rescued her relationship with her two children, despite it ruining his relationship with her.

He told the Mail on Sunday: “It’s been one hell of a time. But I love my daughter with all my heart and soul.

“Where would Britney be right now without that conservatorship? And I don’t know if she’d be alive. I don’t.

“For protecting her, and also protecting the kids, conservatorship was a great tool. Without it, I don’t think she would have got the kids back.”

Under US law, a conservatorship is granted by a court for people who are seen as unable to make their own decisions, and is usually used for those with dementia or other mental illnesses.

In Britney’s case, it was split into two parts – one covering her estate and financial affairs, and the other affecting personal matters such as access to her children and even getting married.

Jamie was appointed to control both, and was paid a reported $16,000 (£13,000) a month.

The singer began behaving erratically in 2007 after her divorce from Kevin Federline was finalised and she lost custody of their two children.

A temporary conservatorship was established around this time and made permanent later that year.

Jamie said the court arrangements helped Britney rebuild her finances.

She was reported to have been worth about $50 million (£41 million) in 2008, at the time the conservatorship began, but Jamie that was mostly gone.

During the period covered by the court order, she released four albums, embarked on three world tours and performed a two-year residency in Las Vegas.

Her conservatorship came to an end after a 13-year battle, which ended his control of her life. A judge in Los Angeles allowed the Hit Me Baby One More Time star to regain control of her life and career including her estimated $60million (£66m) estate.

Since Jamie’s role ended last year, Britney is already attracting notoriety with colourful, sometimes semi-naked social-media posts and he did not want to send her back “further down the hole”.

Last month, she posted a rant on Instagram, claiming that during the conservatorship “it felt like my dad was trying to kill me”, before deleting her account.

But last week she was back on social media, posting a video of herself dancing topless in the shower.

And earlier this month Britney admitted that her husband Sam Asghari tought shehad “gone bonkers” after an incident with stranger at a fast food chain.

Today, now retired, Jamie is ever hopeful of reconciliation, and that he does not regret the conservatorship.
