Britney Spears’ sister Jamie Lynn Spears has claimed she tried to “put steps in place” to help her end the conservatorship she was placed in while facing apparent mental health struggles in 2008.
Jamie Lynn, best known for her acting roles in kids’ TV show Zoey 101 before launching her own country music career, sat down with ABC News to end her silence on the affair.
It comes after Britney was officially freed from the restrictions imposed by the conservatorship in November last year.
Before then, her dad had full control of the star’s finances – with Britney, 40, also claiming her father Jamie Spears placed restrictions on her personal life.
Appearing in the news segment, Jamie Lynn was asked: “What was your reaction when the conservatorship was dissolved?”
She replied: “I was happy. First off, when it was put into place, I was 17 years old and about to have a baby. So I didn’t understand what was happening, nor was I focused on that – I was focused on the fact that I was a 17-year-old about to have a baby. I understand just as little about it then as I do now.”
The news anchor then said: “You talked in the book about the role that you were asked to play in the conservatorship…”
And Jamie Lynn responded: “There was a time when my sister asked me of her trust and will if I would be the person that ensured that her boys got what they needed.
“Whether she’s in a conservatorship or not that was a very normal thing, I thought. Once I realised that she [was] in a conservatorship, I felt like I didn’t want to be a part of it until maybe she was out of the conservatorship.”
The actress continued: “So there was no me overseeing funds or something like that, and if there was that was a misunderstanding – but either way I took no steps to be a part of it.”
Jamie Lynn went on to elaborate on how she’d attempted to help Britney find the resources to escape the legal contract.
“I’ve always been my sister’s biggest supporter, so when she needed help I set up ways to do so. I went out of my way to make sure that she had the contacts she needed to possibly go ahead and end this conservatorship and just end this all for our family.
“If it’s going to cause this much discord why continue it?”
The reporter pressed: “So you didn’t always agree with the conservatorship?”
Jamie Lynn then explained: “It wasn’t about agree with the conservatorship – everyone has a voice and it should be heard, so if she wanted to talk to other people then I did, I set that up.
“I even spoke to her legal team – her previous legal team – and that did not end well in my favour. So I did take the steps to help, but how many times can I take the steps without… she has to walk through the door.”
