Cheryl Tweedy has confessed she felt helpless when Sarah Harding was battling cancer.
The pair found fame together in 2002 alongside Nadine Coyle, 37, Kimberly Walsh, 40, and Nicola Roberts, 36, when they all took part in the music competition Popstars: The Rivals and Girls Aloud were formed.
However, in August of 2020, Sarah announced that she was battling advanced breast cancer which later became terminal and the star tragically passed away in September of 2021 at the age of 39.

But now her fellow bandmates have opened up to MailOnline to try and drive more people to sign up for the Race For Life for Sarah taking place on July 24th.
In a new interview Cheryl opened up on the last moments she spent with her fellow bandmate, where Sarah asked her to devote time to honouring her memory.
The former X Factor judge explained: “I asked her so much to give me something I could do to make her happy or comfortable, anything at all.”
She added: “Towards the end, she asked me to create a gala in her honour to fund a crucial study that her doctor was working on so I am committed to doing just that.”‘
In a video announcing the Race for Life in her name, Cheryl previously opened up on feeling helpless when trying to comfort her dying bandmate.
In a video posted on the “RFS” story in Sarah’s honour, Cheryl explained: “When Sarah was really sick, we were all desperately trying to find ways to help her, to comfort her, to do whatever she wanted.”
The Fight For This Love singer added: “You feel so helpless in times like that”
Girls Aloud went on to become of the biggest girl bands in the United Kingdom, gaining 20 consecutive top ten singles in the United Kingdom, 7 certified albums and 5 BRIT Award nominations, winning Best Single in 2009 for ‘The Promise’.
And in the new interview, Cheryl couldn’t help but think of Sarah as she reflected on the legacy of the girl group.
The Promise This recording artist said: “Sarah was such an integral part of us all … It is the most natural thing to do for Sarah and her legacy to come together in support of her and others who may be going through the same devastation we experienced.”
Meanwhile, the band are planning other activities as they work with Cancer Research to honour Sarah’s memory.
These include a huge gala dinner – as per Sarah’s personal request – with more details due to be released in the near future.
Cheryl explained: ‘We have a gala dinner planned for later this year in Sarah’s honour and at her request. We will be collaborating with Cancer Research UK to raise funding and awareness.’
