Coleen Rooney admits she 'cried every weekend' at home alone while Wayne was away

A new documentary, aptly named Rooney, follows the ups and downs of footballer Wayne Rooney and his wife Coleen’s life and is set to air on Amazon Prime Video this month.

Wayne began his football career at the tender age of 16 in 2002 for Everton and went on to play at the 2004 European Championships.

Since then has gone on to play for Manchester United and became the England captain from 2014 to 2017.

Coleen first met Wayne when they were at school, and she was 12 years old while he was 16.

The couple have been together for 19 years and have four children together, but their relationship hasn’t always been plain sailing.

The pair spoke candidly about their struggles while they were apart during the documentary.

Coleen found the distance between them especially hard, since he was away playing football and she was at home.

Wayne spoke about their early years as teenagers, navigating their love while juggling their careers, she said: “I was 18 and she was 17. We moved to Thornby, we lived in it for about eight months. I moved to Manchester United when I was 18.”

Coleen also reflected on their young love and the time they spent apart, saying: “The thought of it was all fine and great, but then obviously [Wayne] was away every weekend. I used to leave my mum’s and cry all the way home to mine.

“It was all of a sudden, it was a matter of months. Everything just happened. We’ve always grown up quicker than what we were meant to, I think,” she reflected.

Wayne also touched upon his feelings of loneliness and isolation during his climb to the top. He said that he ‘suffered inside’ for long periods of time which resulted in ‘a lot of drinking’ to help the top goal scorer cope.

Wayne wanted to raise awareness of his mental health struggles and discussed the importance of the documentary: “I wanted to be honest and touch on everything that has happened in my life, which is important.”

“I want people to have a better understanding of me as a person, really. Throughout a young sportsperson’s life they go through difficult periods and there is a lot of me, talking about moments where I was really down, I didn’t want to be around anyone,” he revealed.
