Coleen Rooney brands Wayne a 'charmer' as she recalls childhood flirting and love poems

Coleen Rooney has revealed that her hubby Wayne Rooney was a “charmer” when they first met – but it seems she didn’t always fancy the footballer.

In fact, the former England soccer star had to keep asking her out dates before he finally won her over.

The mum-of-four, 35, opened up about her relationship with Wayne in the new Amazon Prime documentary – Rooney.

In the documentary, Coleen said Wayne was “full of confidence” and “always up to something”, hinting the athlete was rather mischievous as a youngster.

The pair met at secondary school, and used to live so close to each other in the suburbs of Liverpool that she could hear the sports star’s mum shouting his name in the street.

Describing Wayne, she said: “Cheeky, full of confidence, always up to something.

“I always remember he used to hang around by where I lived and every now and again you’d get his mum shouting up and down the street, ‘Wayne!'”

Coleen also explained how close she is with the Rooney cohort too, given their families grew up together.

She went on: “I am best friends with Wayne’s cousin Claire. My dad and Claire’s dad ran the local boxing gym. Our families have grew up together.”

It was clearly love at first sight for smitten Wayne, because he admitted he wanted to marry her when he was just 11 or 12 years old.

Wayne said: “I think I was about 11 or 12. I knew I wanted to go out with her. I knew I wanted to marry her. And I said to her at the time, ‘When we grow up we’re gonna get married and you’re gonna have our kids.’

On being rejected by Coleen, he added: “She was looking at me like, ‘Yeah, good one.’

However, Wayne would eventually bag himself the date of his dreams with Colleen.

Coleen Rooney says she “cried every weekend” home alone as Wayne played football.

Wayne explained: “I was 18 and she was 17. We moved to Thornby. We lived in it for about eight months. I moved to Man United when I was 18.

Coleen added: “The thought of it was all fine and great but then obviously [Wayne] was away every weekend.

“I used to leave my mum’s and cry all the way home to mine. It was all of a sudden, it was a matter of months.

“Everything just happened. We’ve always grown up quicker than what we were meant to, I think.

Rooney is available to watch on Amazon Prime from February 11
