Jim Davidson has come under fire for a recent comment about women football players after he appeared on GB News.
Former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton, journalist Ella Whelan and comedian Jim Davidson spoke to Dan Wootton about recent football news.
They opened a debate on their thoughts about Northern Ireland women’s manager Kenny Shiels’ recent comment about women, saying that they are “more emotional than men”.
He said: “In the women’s game, when a team concedes a goal they concede a second within a very short period of time. Right through the women’s game, because girls and women are more emotional than men, they [don’t take a goal going in] very well.”
He made the statement after the team were beaten 5-0 by England and later apologised after meeting with the Irish Football Association.
Jim Davidson tried to make a joke about the situation on GB News and commented on “cancel culture” but was quickly reprimanded by Ella Whelan.
He stated: “It’s all about this cancel culture, he said what he thought, his opinion. It turns out the girls have spoken about emotional problems and mental problems on the pitch so he’s said something that has upset someone [who is] a bit woke and they’ve said: ‘You better go and apologise.’”
He went on to say that the “woke” is “creeping in everywhere” and that people “don’t need it”.
Jim then made the damning comment: “Talking of emotion, when someone scores a goal, doesn’t happen much down the valley but these guys run around like headless chickens and they whip their shirt off. Well, I’m looking forward to seeing that in women’s football to tell you the truth.”
After he cracked the attempted joke he apologised for “stooping that low” as host Dan Wootton laughed, but Ella shut them both down.
She said that she wanted to “make one thing clear,” which was that people were “p***** off” because Kenny said that “women weren’t able to control their emotions”.
The journalist asked her co-stars to try and “see why women might be ticked off” as her fellow panellists have “joked about women lifting their tops up” which she branded: “Not very funny”.
Ella also made the point that she had been “introduced as a girl, not a woman,” which made Jim throw his pencil at the screen and exclaim “here we go”.
