Coronation Street bosses have announced that a huge musical star is set to join the ITV soap, as a new character that will bring an unexpected surprise for one of the residents.
Jodie Prenger, who won BBC talent show I’d Do Anything in 2008 and starred as Nancy in the West End production of Oliver, will join the soap as Glenda – the sister of undertaker George Shuttleworth.
Known for playing Miss Hannigan in Annie, Shirley Valentine in a recent UK theatre tour and the National Theatre Production of A Taste Of Honey, Jodie said her new role is a “bucket list” moment.
She said: “I know I sound like a soppy sod, but it’s been on my bucket list to be in Coronation Street since I was little.
“It’s an honour, it truly is a very special moment in my life. To be part of something my family and I have loved for so long.”
“And what a character, oh I have to say, total dream part.”

Glenda is set to turn around brother George’s fortunes, after the undertaker has recently been struggling following the arrival of his childhood bully Frank Bardsley.
However, Glenda’s unexpected arrival on the cobbles is set to surprise George – with viewers left wondering how she’ll change the undertakers life in Weatherfield.
That’s not all, as it seems Glenda may be sticking around for a while, as she joins a long line of fan favourites to step behind the bar of the Rovers Return.

“I can’t wait for you all to meet fun and sassy Glenda, George Shuttleworth’s sister. I love Tony Maudsley already, what a fella!” said Jodie.
“Your first day on the cobbles is one of the most nerve wrecking experiences you’ll go though and everyone was just so gloriously lovely, kind and welcoming. It was, and is, everything I expected, and more.”
Jodie has already begun filming her scenes for episodes that are due to be broadcast in August, and said she will be drawing on her previous experience of performing on cruise liners as part of her role.
Ahead of Jodie’s Coronation Street debut, Producer Iain MacLeod said: “Glenda sails in fresh from the cruise ships with a whiff of the exotic, quickly making best friends and enemies in equal measure.
“The character is loads of fun and has echoes of classic Coronation Street females of old.
“Jodie is a fabulous talent and we are all very excited to have her aboard. She has felt very Corrie since the moment she stepped onto set and I think the viewers will love her.”
