Coronation Street’s Owen Armstrong (Ian Puleston-Davies) could be set for an epic soap return as fans are certain he’s in for a huge custody battle.
During Monday’s episode, cracks were beginning to show in Joseph Brown’s relationship with his dad Chesney and step-mum Gemma, as he begged his dad for £10 to pay for a school trip.
Things got even worse when Joseph began picking at his ratty school jumper, and heard he might not get any lunch at school due to a mix-up.
And with the youngster set to disappear in the upcoming days, fans are sure Owen – who is Joseph’s grandfather – could return to take care of his relative.
Joseph was born to Owen’s daughter Katy and Chesney, before Katy was killed off in an off-screen car accident in Portugal in 2017.
Fans are certain his return is on the cards, as one posted on Facebook: “Do you believe there is any truth in the rumour that former resident of the street Owen Armstrong will return to try and gain custody of his grandson Joseph Brown (Chesney’s Son)?”
Someone else gushed: “I wish he would, he is an excellent actor!”
“Well Joseph goes missing so it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise if he was to come back,” another fan added.
A fourth fan quickly theorised: “He could be coming back from Portugal to spend time with Izzy. And now that Joseph goes missing will only cause Owen to believe Chez has too much on his plate with the quads.”
However, others simply weren’t so sure, as one added: “He won’t get custody. Grandparents don’t have legal rights to their grandchildren as long as one parent is alive, as far as I am aware, but this is Soapland after all, so who knows what will happen.”
Someone else posted: “Owen hasn’t been seen or heard of for years and suddenly he wants to be in Joseph’s life? It’s a bit suspicious to me.”
Actor Ian Puleston-Davies appeared in over 500 episodes of the soap, before going on to star in programmes like Marcella, Vera and Father Brown.
The star teased a soap return in 2018 during serial killer Pat Phelan’s reign of terror, telling TV Times: “People are always asking me when I’m going to go back in and finish [Phelan] off.
“I would have liked the two of them to have had a final showdown on the cobbles, a High Noon encounter! Owen needs to come down from Aberdeen and sort him out once and for all. It could still happen!”
Of course, Corrie wasn’t Ian’s only soap role, as he appeared as Jimmy in EastEnders back in 1998 and as Terry Williams in Hollyoaks before going on to star in shows like Holby City and The Bill.
Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV from 7:30pm.
