Coronation Street's Spider return confirmed as icon Martin Hancock resumes ITV soap role

Coronation Street has confirmed that Spider Nugent will return to Weatherfield later this year.

Actor Martin Hancock, 53, will resume the role he played as Emily’s eco warrior nephew between 1997 and 2003.

25 years since he first walked into Weatherfield, the fan favourite will appear on our screens in July.

As the on/off boyfriend of Toyah Battersby, Spider left Corrie in 2003, when he headed to London to start afresh with his then girlfriend.

Toyah and Spider later separated with him moving to Peru, while after a failed marriage Toyah returned to Weatherfield be with her family in 2016.

With life having moved on, has Spider held on to the ideals of his youth and has he come back for one final attempt to rekindle his love with Toyah or is it something else that brings him back to the street?

On returning to the show Martin said: “Having the opportunity to walk back onto the cobbles is fabulous, I’m so excited to be seeing a lot of old friends and picking up what Spider has been up to.

Fans of the ITV soap were sent into meltdown with the surprise casting announcement.

Taking to Twitter, one social media user said: “Spider is one of those dream #Corrie returns so hopefully they develop his character naturally from when he left.

A third person posted: “Spider? Is that you?! Toyah needs you!!!”

A fourth fan wrote: “See a more grownup Spider and bringing back Martin Hancock again too oooo yay but what does this mean for @RealGeorgiaT if he isnt staying for long?? Aww what if he’s come back really to tell everyone that Emily’s possibly sadly passed and isnt a proper stint?? Aww hope its not.”

“Loved Spider and Toyah first time round and has been fab now watching all the past 1999/2000 catchups with them first getting together too. So exciting bringing back again now 20 years on and hopefully no more distancing either!!”

Fans will have to wait and see what brings Spider back to Weatherfield.

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV at 8pm
