Corrie characters who mysteriously vanished – Cilla Battersby to Andy McDonald

Carla Connor gave Jenny Connor a strong warning in Coronation Street this week, after reminding her that her sister Kate Connor was entitled to a share of Johnny’s inheritance.

Kate Connor was the daughter of the late Johnny Connor, who died after he tried to save wife Jenny during super soap week.

Following the death of her own partner in 2019, Kate Connor left the ITV cobbles and has not been seen since, not even making an appearance at her own dad’s funeral later last year.

Her absence from the funeral and the soap left fans confused, but she’s not the only character to have seemingly disappeared from Coronation Street throughout the years.

Daily Star looks at other characters who have vanished from the cobbles and have not been heard from since, and whether they might return in the future.

Cilla Battersby-Brown

Fiz and Chesney’s mum, Cilla Battersby-Brown, caused a huge drama when she caught the eye of Les Battersby in 2003 while working as a barmaid in the Rovers Return.

After Les decided to leave wife Janice, he and Cilla got married, but sadly their romance was not to last when he slept with ex-wife Janice and later left to join a ZZ Top tribute band.

In 2007, Cilla suddenly left her children in Weatherfield after deciding to move away from the cobbles – with no reason or explanation as to why.

The mystery of Cilla’s dissapearance was later solved when Fiz and Chesney visited their mother in South Africa during the Out of Africa Coronation Street specials, where Cilla was now living.

Despite the character making a brief return in 2014, Cilla has not been seen since and is not mentioned by Fiz whatsoever in the soap.

The only reference to Cilla is Chesney’s occasional visits to see her – leaving viewers wondering what happened to Cilla and whether she will ever return to Weatherfield.

However actress Wendi Peters has not ruled out a return to the soap, telling The Express: “There are no plans for Cilla to return.

“I occasionally tune in to see what Fiz and Chesney are up to.

“I’m lucky to be really busy with other work but I guess, never say never.”

Andy McDonald

Andy McDonald is the younger brother of long serving Coronation Street resident Steve McDonald, who after graduating from university was mysteriously never seen again.

It was later heard on screen that Andy had moved to Spain to become an English teacher, but since he made a brief return to the cobbles for Steve’s wedding to Becky McDonald, he hasn’t been heard from since.

The character did not even fly back for Steve’s subsequent weddings to Michelle Connor and Tracy Barlow, leaving viewers wondering why and whether the two brothers had fallen out.

Whatever the reason for Andy’s sudden disappearance from the show, actor Nicholas Cochrane who played Andy McDonald, hopes that Andy will one day return to the cobbles, saying: “It would be good if the boys got back in touch and Andy ends up back in Weatherfield.”

Kate Connor

Kate Connor is the daughter of late Coronation Street resident Johnny Connor, who died after drowning in the sewers under the street last year.

The character was last seen in Coronation Street in 2019, before departing the cobbles following the death of her partner Rana Nazir.

Since then, there has been little or no mention of Kate, with many viewers left confused why she did not turn up for dad Johnny Connor’s funeral, following his death during super soap week.

One viewer took to social media to say: “Seems a bit insensitive for Kate not to be at her own father’s funeral?” while a second added: “Oh yeah Kate! She couldn’t come back for her Dad’s funeral?”

A third added: “Kate can’t be here today. Selfish selfish Kate.”

However, Kate Connor has been mentioned quite a lot recently following Johnny’s death, particularly after Carla Connor had to remind Jenny that Kate is entitled to a share of Johnny’s inheritance.

With Johnny still a focus of attention on the cobbles, many viewers will be wondering if Kate will make an unexpected comeback.

Viewers will have to wait and see if she will, but actress Faye Brooks has not ruled out a return from the soap, telling The Shropshire Star: “I would gladly go back.

“For now, I am just loving my life back on the stage but if the timing was right, I’d happily return.”

Rosie Webster

Rosie Webster is the eldest daughter of fan-favourites Kevin and Sally, and sister to Sophie Webster.

During her time on the cobbles, she was involved in huge story lines including plans to elope to Berlin with boyfriend Craig Harris and discovering her mum Sally’s affair with Ian Davenport.

She later left the street after she was offered a modelling contract in London in 2012, and the character was not heard from for many years – and rarely mentioned.

Rosie did not even return when her sister Sophie’s partner was killed, leaving viewers wondering where she had gone and why she had not returned home to comfort her sister.

However it was not long until she returned to the cobbles in 2017, before departing again one year later after actress Helen Flanagan took maternity leave from the soap.

However, Helen has said that Rosie may return to Coronation Street when her children are older, telling Digital Spy: “The door is left open.

“I wouldn’t go back at the moment, as Charlie isn’t even one yet. Your children are only young once, so I don’t want to miss out on anything.

“I would love to go back because of course I want to achieve things for myself, but I have to put my children first.”

Toyah Battersby

Toyah Battersby is Leanne’s younger sister, and despite being a regular resident on the cobbles today, she mysteriously vanished in 2003.

After five years in Weatherfield, outspoken Toyah moved to London with Spider Nugent and did not return – even when family dramas occurred, including her parents’ split and both her parents leaving the street for good.

There was also little mention of Toyah by sister Leanne, but fans were soon delighted when the character returned in 2016.

Since then she has been involved with huge storylines including her relationships with lawyer Imran Habeeb and Peter Barlow.

Speaking about how the character has changed since her first appearance on the soap, actress Georgia Taylor told The Mirror: “Toyah came back to the street grown up and a very different woman from the one who left all those years ago.

“She’s much more mellow now than she used to be – but there are flashes of the old Battersby in her coming out again. I’ve missed playing that fiery side to her – and I’m really happy we’re getting a bit of it back.”
