Coronation Street fans were left in tears during the latest episode as the ITV soap paid tribute to Manchester Arena bombing victim and superfan Martyn Hett.
Ahead of the fifth anniversary of the tragic terrorist attack, which took 22 lives, Friday night’s show (May 20) included a scene which saw Gail and Eileen visit a memorial with flowers.
A plaque on the memorial read: “For Martyn and all those who lost their lives on the 22nd of May 2019. We stand together.”
The touching moment reduced some Corrie viewers to tears, while others ‘got lumps in their throats’.
One viewer wrote: “Sweet nod to the anniversary of the Manchester Arena bombing on #CoronationStreet. Yes I cried.”
Another commented: “What a lovely tribute to the Manchester Arena disaster. It caused a lump in my throat. Well done Coronation Street.”
Meanwhile, a third soap fan said: “Nice touch, Corrie. Martyn Hett the Corrie superfan name as well as 21 other victims live on forever on the cobbles.”
A fourth viewer added: “Bravo. That scene said a million words.”
A fifth concluded: “What a lovely tribute on Coronation Street to Martyn and all those that lost their lives in Manchester Bombing.”
While viewers felt emotional at the poignant moment, Gail and Eileen approached the plaque with flowers and somber expressions.
Joining Eileen at the memorial, Gail said: “It’s a lovely bench, ain’t it?”
Nodding in agreement, Eileen replied: “It’s a crying shame it even has to be here.”
As Gail acknowledged that the fifth anniversary of the tragic attack will take place on Sunday, May 22, she added: “It could have been any one of us, couldn’t it?
“Any one of us from this street.”
Martyn Hett was a renowned Coronation Street superfan.
The deceased 29-year-old had a tattoo of Deidre Barlow’s face on his leg.
Coronation Street airs on ITV.
