Corrie icon Beverley Callard announces first acting role since quitting ITV soap

Former Coronation Street star Beverley Callard is gearing up for a comeback after landing her first major acting gig since quitting the ITV soap two years ago.

The 64-year-old actress, who played Liz McDonald on the cobbles on and off from 1989 to 2020, will star as Pauline is Gold’s new comedy series Newark, Newark.

The series, which is currently being filmed in Nottingham, also stars Gavin & Stacey’s Mat Horne, comedienne and writer Morgana Robinson and Misfits actress Lauren Socha.

Taking to Twitter, the star shared a series of behind the scenes snaps taken as she got to work on her new show.

Tagging the series’ creator, Bev tweeted: “Another day filming Newark Newark @nathan_foad.”

The first snap showed the actress glammed up, rocking blue eyeshadow and red lipstick as the camera men looked at the back of her.

A series of selfies then followed with Morgana and Saskia Chana.

Fans were thrilled at the announcement as she teased her return to the small screen following an extended break.

One fan commented: “This’ll be incredible. Your comedic timing plus Morgana?! Amazing.”

Another told the actress: “This sounds fabulous!!!! And Morgana too. Joyous!!!! X.”

The three-part series, which is currently filming in Nottingham, follows ‘pugnacious chip shop manager and exhausted matriarch, Maxine, as she tries to ride out her divorce and find someone who actually lights her fire’.

It’s thought that Beverley will play the mum of Morgana’s character Maxine.

Bev was due to make her return to acting in the touring theatre show, Thundergirls, but it was scrapped due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Fans saw Bev appear on ITV’s I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! which landed the star with a whopping £125k pay packet after acting gigs dried up.

Bev has since partnered up with campmate Jordan for a new ITV series which sees the actress and Radio 1 DJ travel over 900 miles on a fun road trip through Spain.

The series is expected to culminate in Beverley renewing her wedding vows to her husband, Jon McEwan.

Fans my remember Bev gushing over her passionate relationship with her hubby during her appearance on I’m A Celebrity and even branded him a ‘megas**g’.

Revealing how they decided to renew their commitment to each other, Beverley said: “We both want to renew our wedding vows.

“When I came out of the castle, I looked a disaster and Jon was waiting for me at the hotel. He just said ‘let’s do it, let’s get married all over again. It was like he proposed again.’”
