Corrie Joe Duttine's life – co-star fiance, wedding heartache and forgotten cobbles role

Tim Metcalfe hides a huge secret from wife Sally in Coronation Street, as he finds out that he needs to undergo heart surgery.

Having previously visited the doctors, the couple underwent a series of health checks – with doctors revealing the news to Tim earlier this week.

Reluctant to tell Sally, it begins to have an affect on their relationship, as he decides against spending a romantic evening with her – leaving Sally wondering what is going on.

Since joining Coronation Street in 2010, Tim Metcalfe has been through many ups and downs, but in real life, actor Joe Duttine’s life is far less dramatic.

However, viewers might not realise that Joe had another soap role before Tim Metcalfe and is also engaged to one of his Corrie co-stars.

Long before he stepped onto the cobbles, Joe had a highly successful acting career in some of TV’s biggest programmes including Lovejoy and a Touch of Frost.

His first regular TV role came between 1994-1995, when he starred as Steve Turner in detective comedy series Pie in the Sky, alongside Harry Potter actor Richard Griffiths.

From there, he had a number of guest roles in series including Life on Mars and New Tricks, before appearing as Joe in the mini series Time of your Life in 2007 and Rutter in 2013 TV series The Village.

However, he is best known to viewers as Tim Metcalfe in Coronation Street, a role he has played since 2013.

What viewers might not realise though, is that Joe had another role on the soap a few years before.

In 2010, he could regularly be spotted out and about on the cobbles as D.S Carr, before stepping onto the street as a permanent Weatherfield resident.

Co-star fiance

Joe Duttine is engaged to Abi Franklin star Sally Carmen

While they both might be married to other Weatherfield residents on screen, in real life, Coronation Street stars Joe Duttine and Sally Carman, who plays Abi Franklin, are engaged.

The couple have been together for nearly four years since meeting on the set of the show in 2018, and in June 2021, they celebrated their third anniversary together with some sweet snaps on Instagram.

One photo showed Joe and Sally snuggled up together in a hot tub as they gazed lovingly at one another, with the caption: “three years” and a yellow heart emoji.

The post sent fans into meltdown, with some sharing their love for the couple in the comments.

Even fellow Coronation Street co-stars rushed to comment on the photo, including Sally Ann Matthews, who said: “I mean, who couldn’t love that face x.”

Sally also revealed that Joe took care of her after filming the dramatic Super Soap Week scenes, which saw her character Abi Franklin trapped in the tunnels underneath the cobbles.

She told press: “To be fair [to Joe], there was one night I came in and he always has tea prepared and I was freezing.” she said.

“He laid out my pyjamas, dressing gown, ran me a bath with salts and a cup of tea. So sweet, he is brilliant!”

Wedding heartbreak

Like many couples across the country, Joe and Sally were heartbroken when they had to postpone their wedding due to the pandemic.

After postponing the wedding, Sally told ITV daytime programme Loose Women: “I think personally I’m not sure where we are gonna be in December, the way things have been dealt with.

“So I didn’t wanna risk arranging a wedding…. we want to have a party so if there’s only 15 people allowed to come to that, it’s not great really.

“So I thought it was best we defer it for a year and hopefully get the wedding we want.”

With the couple hoping to finally tie the knot in 2022, it seems that a winter wedding could be on the cards, as Sally revealed in an interview with the Mirror, “I’m obsessed with Christmas, so when Joe said, ‘what’s your favourite time, when would you most like to do it?’, it had to be Christmas.”

She added: “we’re going to have the wedding late afternoon so it’ll be dark and lit by rows of Christmas trees and twinkly lights; I can’t wait.

“We should have been getting married this December but put it to next year because we didn’t know what the score was going to be Covid-wise.”
