Emmerdale has been declared the winner of the coveted Best Soap gong at the British Soap Awards 2022.
The huge award win comes after a year of hefty storylines, with serial killer Meena Jutla front and centre.
Played by Paige Sandhu, the killer storyline kept audiences on the edge of their seats right up until Meena was sent to prison for life – but not before she held the courthouse hostage.
Unsurprisingly, Paige was also recognised at the awards ceremony in the Best Leading Performer category, while Emmerdale also scooped the Best Family gong for the Dingles.
Though Paige lost out in the Villain of the Year category, which went to Coronation Street ’s Corey Brent star Maximus Evans, Best Dramatic Performance also went to an Emmerdale star – Mark Charnock for his portrayal of Marlon Dingle’s stroke storyline.
Best Storyline went to Hollyoaks for Misbah’s rape, while EastEnders also rang in a win for Best On-Screen Partnership made up of Lacey Turner and Gillian Wright.
Best Young Performer went to Millie Gibson for her portrayal of Kelly Neelan in Coronation Street, while Best Newcomer was awarded to Ross Boatman from EastEnders.
BBC medical soap Doctors wasn’t without a win either, as it won Best Single Episode for Three Consultations and a Funeral.
The Outstanding Achievement Award went to EastEnders’ Letitia Dean, while Tameka Empson won Best Comedy Performer.
Scene of the Year also went to Hollyoaks for the Misbah Doesn’t Consent scene, while the coveted Tony Warren Award – which recognises off-screen achievements – went to Coronation Street’s Jan McVerry.
The star-studded ceremony was back for another year after a spate of cancellations due to the Covid-19 pandemic, meaning last year’s ceremony was scrapped entirely.
Meanwhile, the Inside Soap Awards did go ahead in 2021, albeit without a live ceremony, with Coronation Street winning the most awards overall.
The last British Soap Awards came in 2019, with Hollyoaks taking the gong for Best British Soap overall.
The change-up meant soap stars across the country were finally able to get glammed up once again for the ceremony’s return, and stars of EastEnders, Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Hollyoaks and more all turned up the glam for the red carpet.
The cast of Emmerdale looked particularly sensational, with stars like Rosie Bentham – who plays Gabby Thomas – and Amelia Spencer star Daisy Campbell looking a far cry away from their Dales characters.
Rosie opted for a silk turquoise dress with shoulder-baring straps, while Daisy opted for a cut-out black number as they both sipped on champagne.
Meanwhile, the Corrie cast also ramped up the glam, with Kelly Neelan star Millie Gibson rocking an all white floor-length gown with intricate arm bracelets and a sparkly gold clutch.
The awards weren’t the only revelation of the night, however, as Corrie’s Shona Platt star Julia Goulding also debuted her baby bump for the first time after keeping her pregnancy on the down-low.
Julia rocked an elegant off-the-shoulder black dress with long sleeves as she cradled her bump for a series of red carpet snaps, turning up the glamour with her brunette tresses tucked into an elaborate up-do.
