Corrie newcomer mistakenly adopts seagull called Steven – now it won't leave her alone

Coronation Street newcomer Jodie Prenger has taken in a seagull as a lodger – and now it won’t leave her “nest”.

The animal lover, who plays larger-than-life Glenda, took pity on the bird thinking it was injured.

Jodie, 43, said: “I was driving home recently and it was in the road, so I picked it up. It seems fine but it doesn’t want to go anywhere.

“It’s getting well fed and enjoying being in the paddling pool with the ducks.

“Me and my fella Simon have called him Steven Seagull!”

Jodie, who found fame on BBC talent show I’d Do Anything in 2008, said she loves being closer to home on the soap rather than touring with stage show because of her menagerie of pets.

She explained: “I’ve got three rescue cows, three rescue ducks, about 17 chickens – mostly rescued – plus three dogs, three cats, and now I’ve got a seagull.

“Me fella, Simon, likes me being at home and so do my animals. My passion is looking after rescued animals.

“I’d love more animals so if anyone knows of a one-eyed goat or three-legged-pig… I just need to add that Simon likes animals as much I do!

“There’s no volumising of the hair or false eyelashes when I’m out there with them. No heels or fancy clothes. I’m in my wellies and, to be honest, I’m feral! I love it.”

Jodie arrived on the cobbles last week as George Shuttleworth’s sassy sister Glenda, a barmaid in the Rovers Return.

She said she cried when she won the part because it was always her “dream” to be on Coronation Street.

Jodie joked: “Sorry if I sound a bit like a competition winner but Corrie’s been on my bucket list for years.

“I was on the Rovers set and I’m just in awe. When I met Ken Barlow – or rather Bill Roache who plays him – for the first time… Oh my God, I practically curtseyed.”
